When i start my car up in the morning, it's all find and dandy till i turn the steering wheel, then i get a pretty loud sound, much like that of a leaf blower, either way i turn the wheel, at a complete stop or moving. The RPMS also go up a bit. This happens until the car is warm. I asked a friend of mine from HS who has a bit of knowlage in this area, he said it's "morning sickness" and it's possibly a gasket.......

the fluid is just really really cold and if it's never been replaced it might be a good idea. the sound is the pump complaining.

my mom's 88 bmw does it and it goes away after a while.

either the pump is on its way out or like pepsi mentioned, the fluid is really old and can no longer pump very well at low temps. I believe the toyotas used Dexron IIE in their power steerings back then, so what you can do is a drain refil untill the fluid appears new.

Get a clean soap pump dispenser, or a turkey baster you plan on not using any more, or a plastic syringe, suction out as much old fluid as you can, replace with new dexron III (dexron III is compatible with the IIE in this case for the power steering requirements of the toyota). Then drive the car or start the motor to circulate the fluid. Repeat this untill the fluid in the resivoir looks new. It may take 3-5 times of a drain and refill to achieve this.

Then a flush definitely won't hurt:)

EDIT: If it was running dry then your pump *may* be shot. They definitely do not like running dry.

if it's shot, then why does the noise subside when the engine warms up and i've been on the road a while? how much do one of these things cost?

I said *may*. Mine does the same thing:) I mean, eventually it'll go out, but don't worry about it until it does:)
