YACT: Mechanic said my car was running rich.

He also said that my fuel injector and throttle body needed to be cleaned as well. Wanted to charge me $650, but I refused and he went to $250.

Are there any dangers from having your car run rich (due to a bad O2 sensor) for long periods of time? Did I get ripped off?

I know I had to replace my O2 sensor for my car to pass emissions testing. And $650 is way too high. It wasn't hard to replace the sensor in a Honda Civic. I think the part cost was $200.

Your mechanic is trying to rip you off.

I don't have a car but on my Cherokee a bad O2 sensor can give you ass for gas mileage. And I definetly agree with what jagec said :x

If it is your o2 sensor you would smell rich fumes and it would have some idling problems. Had that problem with 3 cars and o2 sensors are pretty cheap.

Running too rich can foul spark plugs, cause carbon build-up in the cylinder head, and dilute the oil (excess gasoline gets past the piston rings and is then mixed into the oil, reducing the oil's effectiveness).

That said, unless you're having problems from those conditions, they likely have not happened yet and as everyone else has said, your mechanic is trying to overcharge you. Find a new mechanic.

O2 sensors cost about $50 and take about half an hour to R&R. At $650, your mechanic was a horse-thief. At $250, he's just a petty thief.
There are some dangers from running too rich, most of which are minor and long-term.

i have the extended warranty as well. it was $200 for the other service stuff they claimed they did (throttle body and fuel injector cleaning), and $50 for the deductable on the O2 sensor and for the computer diagnostics ($135).

I know this guy was trying to rip me off that's why i gave him a dirty look and told him that no way in the world was i going to pay $650 for the repair.

the funny thing is that I drove to Toronto from Jersey when the service light came on, yet I was getting 25-26 mpg and the engine was pulling strong as hell.

oh well, they had me out of the dealership in less that 3 hours (two guys were working on it), so i'm happy about that aspect.

next time i'm gonna learn how to do the diagnostics myself.
