YACT-Maxima went in the shop today.

No Lifer
Well, the estimate came back at $1700 and a week to fix it. Needs both left side door skins replaced. The shop we took it to is very reputable so it should be good as new again. Unfortunately, the car is silver and I've heard that silver it is one of the most difficult colors to color match.

My wife called me a little while ago to tell me she got some 2 door chevy monte something. I'm assuming it is the Monte Carlo. Can't wait to take that piece of crap out for a test beating tonight. My expectations remain low.

Update-Well, the Monte Carlo didn't disappoint. This car is a typical Chevy hunk of crap. The car is a silver 2003 Chevy Monte Carlo with 10k miles on the clock, thanks Enterprise for yet another crappy rental car.

The seats are over bolstered and the interior is very cheap feeling. The doors close with a rattle and they don't stay open when the car is parked on an incline which should please my wife tomorrow while she trys to put our son in the back seat.

Upon starting I noticed that the service engine soon light remained on for about a minute, even after I started driving. My first impression on driving is that the engine lacks any punch. Even if you floor it the car really is slow to accelerate (maybe I'm just used to the Maxima). The only positive about the drivetrain is the lack of torque steer, this is probably the only thing Chevy got right on this car though.

The handling and feedback through the wheel is horrible. I can't imagine trying to drive this car quickly because there is no feedback through the steering wheel to let you know how the car is handling. Completely numb is how I would describe it.

Brakes were equally numb feeling. Pedal effort is high and the brakes don't feel adequate. Probably wouldn't be difficult to get severe fade from these brakes.

This is a car I will happily NEVER own.

Should I do some 0-60 test runs in the rental? Start it cold and floor it? See if it will spin the tires?

Recommendations? 😀

I doubt it'll be the SS, so your expectations will probably be met.

No, I'm sure it isn't the SS. The SS is only slightly less craptacular than the LS though I'm sure.

Just for grins I popped on Edmunds to see what a 2003 Monte Carlo costs and the LS has a price of $12k and the SS is around $16k used. So, it goes from $22k new to $12k used in 1 year. Nice resale value there.

Even $50,000 luxury cars show problems after 10 jouranlists run the holy piss out the cars. Don't you think that having 50 people before you treating it like you suggested in your quote has some impact in the fit and finish and driving dynamics of the car?

Not saying that it's a good car, but I wouldn't judge my overal opinion of a car on one that's been whored out and abused by every person that's set foot in it.

I didn't mention the stains on the carpet or interior. I didn't beat it BTW. I did do a few mash the gas pedal accelerations but nothing more.

I think a rental car will give you a good idea of how a car will hold up over the long haul. I used to work in the car rental industry and I can report that GM cars, on average, held up worse than any other make we had in our fleet. That is a fact.

Edit-I did rent a Lexus SC300 a few years ago with 12k miles on it and the fit and finish was perfect on that car. I had that car up to 120 between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. That was a great car.

even worse than Ford? That's a surprise...

Just be glad it's not black, they'd have to repaint the whole thing to get it right...

I suggest neutral drops.

Yes, even worse than Ford. Fords weren't great but we didn't have headliners falling out of them and interior panels falling off them for the most part. I would say Ford interiors are better than GM.

Well judging by your torque steer I would say you have a 2002+ maxima which do 14s. Automatics can even do 14.6 AUTO. That's pretty fast for a stock car.

Check engine light on = "Limp Mode" for most modern vehicles.

Check engine light is not on. There is a service engine soon light which is literally a 2"x2" amber light on the right side of the gauge cluster.

Check Engine, Service Engine, same deal for this case. Apparently many modern vehicles "downgrade" their performance when one of those lights comes on in order to prevent engine damage or force you to get a dealer service-rape. 😛 The family van rev-limits itself at 3500 when it needs service. 😛

Yeah.it might be wrong to base your entire opinion off of a rental car, who knows what it has been through.

Edit: Also, your car has 255HP, the Monte Carlo, 180HP.

Do donuts around and around in the parking lot. Add some nitrous oxide and take it to the track 🙂

I'm waiting for Marlin to come in here and flame you for blasting his precious GM

not all the time. We rented a Chevy Venture once when we drove down to Florida. 100miles away from Orlando, the Check Engine light came on. The van still drove fine so we ignored it. Once we got to Orlando we took it to a Chevy dealership (that the rental company told us to goto)..the tech looked at it..and said it was fine and he just reset the ECU. He said it does that sometimes for no reason (wtf?).

The van was fine though...it went to Florida and came all the way back to Toronto with no problems at all.
