YACT: lubing the doors

The little metal strut that is on every car (you can see it when the door is wide open, it stretches between the front of the door and the body itself) is a little sqeaky. Do I need to use a special sort of grease, or would silicone lube or WD-40 work all right?

I'm thinking silicone but I am not sure. I just am wary of wd-40 because it melts things.

Lithium grease is what I usually use. WD-40 will work, but is so thin it'll be gone in a month.

Best to use a proper lubricant. WD-40 isn't actually a meant for use as general purpose lubricant - it's main property is as a 'water dispersant' (hence the name) for forcing water out of equipment and reducing risk of rust or corrosion. However, it is extremely free flowing and penetrating, so will get into awkward places where it will exert some lubricant activity - albeit temporarily until it evaporates.

Something like 3-in-1 oil, or better a lubricant grease - pretty much anything will do.

Your owner's manual probably specifies the exact requirement, which is lithium grease, as Squisher mentioned. You can buy it in spray form.

WD-40 is not a true lubricant. Ever wonder what the "WD" stands for, its in the name.

Get silicon, or teflon (sprays) or regular ol' grease.
