So I'm fresh out of university, didn't need a car at school, but now with a new job I will need one. I'm close to sealing off a job paying 55k (canadian) as a manager in training. The city is very cheap to live in, so I'd be able to bank serious coin.

Anyway, looking for:

a) a coupe
b) good fuel economy
c) not gutless (like to pass)
d) reliable, lasts in southern ontario (detriot like) winters
e) can be found used (i have an accident on my record)
f) preferably japanese, unless convinced otherwise (kinda goes with fuel economy and reliability)

PS. Does the accident make a big difference with a newer car?
How old do i have to go to make the difference, and would this be made up for with fuel cost (newer cars are way better on gas)

I don't see how the accident you had woudl have any effect on you PURCHASING a car. Now, your car insurance rates on the other hand....will be high REGUARDLESS of what kind of car you get.

What is your price range in USD?

Without knowing that, I'm going to suggest a Scion tC

Fulfills everything you require except the used part.

Yeah...
I figured as much...but is an old car really going to offset this all that much?

Can i get Scion in Canada?

USD price...well the cost of living will be low in this city, basically a car typical of a guy making 50k US in the States.

Sucks to be him. What about an Acura RSX? Are Acuras available in Canada?

Once the new Civic comes out, Acura is releasing a new EL in Canada. The EL sells pretty well up there, even if it is a gussied up Civic. The new model should be decent :)

Why don't you just tell us how much you're looking to spend? There is no "typical car" for someone who makes a certain amount of money. I know some POOR people with expensive cars, and I know some RICH guys with cheap cars.

Also, driving a nicer car than my bosses just doesn't look good.

My short list of my own was RSX, Civic, Celica...thought others could maybe add to the list...

What is the difference over the Civic, i noticed JDP put Honda over Acura in reliability.

Nothing - better styling, and more "luxury" touches.

I suck at budgeting...I'm normally cheap, but i've never had a steady cash flow with perminent expenses :p
