The irrelevant backstory is that I am a Rice U. Student, living on campus so I don't need (and therefore don't have) a car. However, this summer Shell will be employing me, so I will be staying here instead of going home to saint louis, and I need to get to and from work which means I will need a vehicle. I don't want to spend more than 8 grand, it needs to run, and above all, the aircondition needs to work (houston summer = the suck).

What I want from a car: Big. I will be moving very frequently, sometimes with a friend so I need to be able to carry every personal belonging of at least two people in this vehicle (College age, though, so its not that large an amount of stuff). In addition, during the school year I will be cramming dozens of people in, so the bigger the better. Reliable, with reliable climate control. Comfortable: I'd rather have a quiet and comfortable ride than a sporty handling car. I won't be going to a track or streetracing. It needs to be able to do highway speeds easily, though. Fuel economy is not a big issue with me, my commute won't be that long, and during the school year the car will see very light use.

So on to the top candidate: I'm looking at '96 and '97 Town Cars. I love the styling, the interior is large enough for 6 with belts, though you could probably carry significantly more people than that (we did 7 in a prelude at one point). Huge trunk. Very comfortable, but the V8 gives it enough power to do highways easily.

Here: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Relia...ake=Lincoln&model=Town%20Car&trimid=-1 we have reports that the '96 and '97 Town Cars are practically bulletproof everywhere except for a few minor engine flaws, none of which should cost more than 200 to fix if they go wrong.

In houston, there is a fairly good selection. Carmax has a few, and I've heard they charge a premium but that their used vehicles aren't going to be lemons. I would be willing to pay extra for a car that would be more likely to be reliable.

I'm looking for advice on this vehicle, other suggestions, and what I should expect/do when purchasing a used car - I know it would be a good idea to have a 3rd party inspection, but is this step needed with Carmax?

All help is appreciated.

Craigslist is your friend.

Personally, I don't see why you need such a big car for just yourself. I also would advise against the V8. There are other cars out there with V6s that can do highways probably just as well as that big 'ol V8 and would get better gas mileage too. If you want a 4-door to carry some people around in, you should look at some Accords. I know just about everyone reccomends them, but they're a good choice.

Hi, Owl alum here. Whatever you get, check carefully for water damage. A lot of crooks selling salvages from Katrina.

If you need cargo room for moving, a hatchback or van would work better than a sedan, unless you were planning to hitch a Uhaul trailer to that Town Car. If you're working with an 8K budget, a Town Car will be more expensive than a Crown Vic of the same condition.

From what you posted...honestly, it sounds like you want a minivan. If that's too lame, then maybe some sort of SUV. I don't think ANY car will be good to move belongings from place to place, unless you have almost no belongings (certainly no furniture) or don't mind pulling a 5th wheel type trailer.

You can pick up a very nice used minivan in your price range, or an SUV that's possibly a bit older / few more miles than a similarly priced minivan. My mom's old minivan moved myself and two brothers tons of times with no trouble.

Thank's for the advice, but my belongings right now are clothes, computer gear, stereo gear, that sort of thing. The sedan works for me and I would rather not buy a minivan/SUV.

The crown vic/ grand marquis is definatly another option, though I would prefer the lincoln.

Well....depending on how many people you want to carry around, that could be another thing. You can fit 7 comfortably in a minivan / SUV (with plenty of room for extra people on the floor, in the back, etc) but only 6 - POSSIBLY 7-8 depending on size of people, and the level of discomfort they're willing to put up with. But no fully grown adult is gonna want to ride bitch in a sedan for more than a mile or two :)

That said, my dad now has a 1997 Crown Vic with the 4.6L V8. Pretty solid car, roomy, good passing power and such, but it handles like a boat. One thing you do want to watch for - the Ford 4.6L motor used a sh!tty plastic intake manifold that is prone to cracking. It was later replaced with a new metal part (not sure what year) - but not before thousands of the junk plastic ones were installed. :(

If you do get one of these cars, check to see if the intake manifold has been replaced at some point.

**EDIT: Ford used the same motor in the Grand Marquis and the Town Car also...

how about a wagon... focus wagon, vibe/matrix, legacy. all reliable, cheap to run, and great on gas, with lots of space to spare.

I would argue that V6's don't usually get much better mileage than V8s. I don't think I'll ever buy a 6...if I want economy, I'll buy a 4, if I want power, I'll buy an 8...

To the OP: The Town Car sounds pretty good for what you want, another (cheaper) option in that segment is the Chevy Caprice. It's probably better than the Crown Vic for what you want, the wagon option looks better than most station wagons, and hauls ANYTHING, and finally it gets pretty good mileage at 18/26. Some of the '94-96s come with a Corvette-derived LT1, and are shockingly fast :)

It's a pretty reliable car, too.

bump for night crowd. Caprices are more rare than town cars or crown vics so I probably wouldn't have a good selection in Houston.
