I got my 2004 Accord LX (35 mpg on the highway, 6-speaker CD stereo, frigid A/C, lots of room, lots of storage space and comfortable as hell on a long drive) for $18,900 in 2004 (NEW).

EDIT: It is definitely doable if you drive stick.

you could get an 05 accord LX automatic (power everything w/ a/c) 4 banger for $17k + taxes and fees. two of my co workers each bought one for 17k seperately at different dealerships.

eh, 2005 camrys are 15, 795 before tax/title/license here. That's the automatic LE model, zero frills above the LE. Gotta catch the newspaper deal, and they only have a few colors. But if you just want a vehicle to travel in (which it sounds like you do) and horsepower and looks aren't that important, it's a steal. LA's consumers get good deals, you just gotta take off friday from work or get in late. Be the first one at the dealership in the morning and you'll get your pick of the few colors they'll have available. TTL in LA county is between 10 and 11%, easily doable below 20k

hmm, the VW golf diesel is close to that 20k mark, brand new. But i'm unsure of the reliability of the diesel. but 46 highway and 38 city is tough to beat.

edit: not sure on long drives, i've only driven VWs for short drives.

Do all of these suggestions you people keep shooting out have REALLY comfortable seats? Even my mazda 3 seats get a bit old after the 1hr mark

Yah, i've gone 8 hours with a couple rest stops in the camry. Typically it's the tuning of the suspension that determines comfort more than the seats.
