I'm moving to Duluth, MN in a few months, and right now I have a rear wheel drive 400 dollar beater. It just isn't going to cut it 🙂

So i've been car shopping, but i'm hopelessly lost. I was thinking something along the lines of a Grand Prix...I just don't want a grandma car. Need a good chick picking up vehicle for college..ehh.

So, car gurus of ATOT, i need you help!

Necessary-Front wheel drive
Dependable
Good looking
Fast
...7000 or so dollars.

Doable?

Get an impreza 2.5RS or Audi A4 quattro. You will need AWD up there... FWD won't be any better than RWD - both will get you stuck in a foot of snow.

Actually, you might be best of with an SUV - explorer 4x4 or similar. I know someone that goes there and she said the weather is just plain aweful.

If you are moving to MN, you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle that happens to be fast. halik has 2 good ones.

I was not refering to the ford exploder 😛

if you don't want an impreza, look into the subbie legacy gt as well. They do have a 2.5turbo that would suit your needs, but i'm not sure the going price on it.

Also - The subbie SVX if you can get over the styling.

Any quattro car, or 4-motion, or w/e

Maybe you might look into an eclipse GSX? AWD turbo with decen't power and a good aftermarket.

civic all wheel would be great if you can find one...theyre great for the planet and your pockets...i think they came in the 90-91 wagon models...theyre rare!

You don't by any means need one...(it might be nice but not needed) A good front wheel drive cars works just fine.

Oh god, people blow that stuff way out of proportion. A good FWD car will do 100% of what you need it to, there is no need for AWD. It's nice to have, sure. It goes the same for a 4x4 SUV, you sure as hell don't need one. (I've lived in Wyoming my whole life, and know a little bit about driving in the snow.)

For 7 grand, I would take a look at anything with the GM 3800 series V6 in it. You can get something pretty nice for that price range, the engine is about the best thing running in terms of reliability/cost/good power/gas milege, etc. The transmission mated to it is generally very good as well, both have amazingly low failure rates.

I would say a V6 Accord, but I think they are a little out of your price range. One thing to note, is that mid-size to large cars tend to fare better in the snow than your general small/compat car does. Not to say a Civic or something won't work, but it's something to consider.

i agree 100% on snow being totally overblown by these SOCALERS!!! snow does NOT justify an SUV, and it is generally agreed SUVs are worse on the road for anything other than getting out of getting stuck. and getting stuck is rare, so SUVs are nothing more than a liability.

I'm in Southeastern Ontario, so I know about snow here too. Good ol' lake effect crap. I would sell my soul for a 4WD car in those heavy snowfalls, I'll tell ya. My dad has an explorer, and it just eats the snow up. My Protege skids and swerves and slides like iceskates.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess I should have said in the original post that I am from MN..it's just where I am there aren't San Francisco-esque hills.

It's fine to drive slow in my car here..but in duluth you don't really have a choice. Gravity accelerates for ya.

Anyhoo, I really can't get an SUV due to the gas mileage involved. Should have mentioned that too...it's a 3 hour drive, and i want to be able to come home atleast every once in a while.

But thanks, I'll definately look at those suggestions.

Meh. For his price range, he can't afford a newer fairly low miles Honda/Toyota. Espcially one that is decently quick...

Yeah, a 5 year old accord with 60,000 on it is better than a 5 year old grand prix with 60,000 on it... but a 8 year old accord with 110,000 on it isn't better than a 5 year old grand prix with 50,000 on it.
