YACT: Looking at buying a Toyota Tundra

My dad has been looking at buying a new truck, yesterday i saw a dealer ad for a sale this weekend and i saw a tundra advertised for about $12,600. I take it this is a loss leader since it said 6 at this price.

This looks like a good price considering the tacomas go for more.

my questions are:

1. since its a loss leader is this a fixed price?
2. anyone own a tundra, are they good, reliable etc.
3. anything else i shoudl know or ask if we go down there and look at them?
 
Jeez. That's less than blue book trade-in on my 2000 Limited with 70,000 miles!!

I have a Tundra and I *LOVE* it. ZERO problems, takes a beating like nothing else...driven it into the ground from day one and it still runs like a champ. Fantastic acceleration, especially on the highway when overtaking people. More than enough power in the V-8 (though the ones you're looking at are probably V-6...)

I get lots of compliments on my truck too. Oh yeah, and these things are safe. I think they got one of the highest safety ratings in the light truck category.

If you plan on using the rear seat for transporting grown adults, forget it. It's too small to be really practical. Also, get the bucket seats. You lose a lot of storage space in the cab if you get the bench seats like I did.

Also, I recommend bypassing any dealer addons like a bed liner, etc. Aftermarket ones are always better, i.e. Line-X or Rhino Linings.

thanks for the info i wanted a perspective from soemoen that owns one..because my dada tends to haul stuff and keep it for a long time..he still has a 89 nissan p/u he uses to hauls stuff so i know he will be keeping what he buys for a long time
 
Read my edit; a Line-X liner is well worth the investment. I've hauled TONS of stuff, helped half a dozen friends move, etc. and my lining is still in great shape. I only wish I got the side rails lined too b/c they're scratched to hell.

cool ill look into that ...after goign to edmunds.com im wondeing if they made a print error or if i misread the ad..but im almost positive it said 2003 tundra...

btw what kinda mileage u getting?
 
A fully loaded Tundra is about 3x the price you quoted. It's gotta be a V6 stripper model...no power anything, 2WD, 5-speed.

Even so, it's a great quality vehicle for 13K.
 
Whoa ... check that price again. Base price from cars.com is about 16K, and it goes up steeply from there. That's 2WD, normal cab, stripped down everything.

I have a 91 Tundra, V6, standard ext. cab. Very happy with it. Absolutely no problems so far (about 30K miles). I've been offroad with it a bit and it did well, wife got it stuck in the last blizzard we had ... but then she tried to drive through a drift that was "up to the hood"

I've hauled alot of construction material in the past year also ... I might get some stiffer springs for the back, but otherwise was fine.
 
My Dad owns a 2001-2ish Tundra Limited. I've driven it a few times and took it to prom, I was never a fan of trucks but DDDDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMN, its such a nice smooth ride. I believe it uses a similar if not the same as one of the Lexus engines. As someone said it was really nice accleration. We got the leather and wood package and its interior i s a lot nicer then a lot of trucks out there. If I were to ever get a truck in life time I would highly consider a Tundra.
 
The Tundra is a OK all round truck. It is more for driving on the street than a all out work horse like A chevy or GMC. BUT most people really never put there truck to the max ability that GM and ford build them to. GM and Ford are more worried about contracts with Phone companies, power, etc... But my dad pushs his GMC to the limit and prob. over it all the time and it has needed (or for that gotton) little upkeep, and he is hard on his trucks.
But check on upkeep, as Jap parts cost more than fo a chevy. So if he plans on using it for hauling, and working it hard, then find out what upkeep will be.

The price you gave is WAY TO LOW!!! It is prob. a dealer trick to get people in and then stear them to the NICER (i.e. more$$$) truck. Depending on your state they may have to prove it was al least there. Is there a Vin # in the paper? If so go to the dealer look at it, if you can live with the BAREST of trucks, then get it. If they say it is sold ask for the sales invoice.

Yea, it's not a heavy-lifting kind of truck ... with the V8 it might be close to an F150 in that respect, but a bit smaller. Although the F150 in the 91 model year did horrible in crash-tests ... the cockpit basically completely collapsed.
 
Yeah don't expect to be able to push the Tundra as you would an F150, Sierra, Ram, etc. Think of the Tundra as a half step below the other guys in terms of how heavy duty it is. You sacrifice some utility for a LOT more comfort.

As far as mileage...mine's a V-8, 4400lb chunk of metal. Do you have to ask?
I get about 13-15mpg in city streets, about 14-16mpg on the highway. Not very good at all.

My last fillup was 23 gallons @ 2.17 a gallon. Ouch.
 
More than enough power in the V-8

You really think so? I thought the Tundra and the Sequia's I drove felt like they could barely power themselves 😕
 
My V6 get about 17 to 19 MPG on the daily commute (city, but not much stop-n-go) and I've hit 20+ on trips.
The V6 does very well for everday driving, but it does drag a bit on up in the mountains at high altitude. I would've gotten the 8 if you could get it with a stick.

LOL, Auto's are better in trucks, look at every tow comparison and also the factory tow ratings 😉 GM is over a full TON higher for the Auto.

I would never get a manual in a truck, thats insanity... pop under your truck, your tranny is ALUMINUM (WEAK)

What's my loss? I don't tow anything heavy, I get better mileage, the auto is about $1000 more, and I much prefer driving stick anyway.
I see it as a win.
The only reason I'd want the V8 is that it get's a little tough staying in the passing lane above 10K feet with the 6
 
My father is also planning on getting a Tundra b/c wants a v8.

As far as reliability - In general - Toyota Trucks have Great reliability and resale value-
My uncle pushed his 86 4banger past 300K before it was totaled in an accident- I think He still has his 93.
My father was able to sell both his 90 & 91 pickup trucks (22r(e) IS bullet proof!) for pretty good $$$ both trucks had over 215K when he sold them.
My Dad currently drives a Tacoma.
My bro has a 99 v6 4wd Xtracab tacoma.
I also have a 99 v6 4wd Xtracab tacoma.
Prior to my 99, I had a 98 Prerunner purchased used, which I drove for a year and sold it for what I paid!

As far as the loss leader - I expect them to be Possibly:
wrong pic in ad - maybe ad was for a plain jane 2wd Tacoma
demo or hail damage plain jane 2wd single cab Tundra
Definately worth a shot though
