YACT:Looking at a used Honda

I'm looking at a used '95 Honda Accord V-6 EX Sedan. Leather, power windows, power locks and power seats. Its in good condition and has a clean carfax report. The only interesting thing was it was orrigionally a commerical vehicle. Anyway the car has 128k miles and is priced at $5,995 and I think I can get the guy to around $5,500-5,600. What are you thoughts on this car for me as a 16 year old

Commercial vehicle?

What does that mean? If it was part of a fleet, that might actually be a good thing... regular maintenance.

Unless it was a rental.

That's an awesome car to have at 16.

I don't know if I'd get a '95 V6. Kinda heavy and slow. On the bright side, that engine has been around a long time so getting it worked on should be no problem (If I remember right the 2.7L was used in the Acura Legend back in the late 80's).

I thought the old V6 Accords had a bad tranny problem? If I were you I'd get a newer Civic. I personally hate getting leather on used cars because they wear really easily and I don't think it looks good. The older V6 isn't that fast either, about the same speed as the new I4 IIRC. I love the Accord but I think it's a little too big and "old" for a youngster to be driving.

Sounds like it may be a decent car physically if it wasn't a rental, but it seems rather high. I know that it is comparing apples to oranges, but I got a grand marquis (96) w/86k miles for like $6k. Its nowhere near similar to a honda, but it should give you an idea of year/mileage vs. price. 128k for that price? I'd keep looking for a little while and see if there werent any better deals out there.

What do you mean too big and "old"...I personally think its a fairly nice looking. Now the shifting was not the best of the years, but it still runs very.

That's just how I see the car. For example, I would never drive a Camry because I'm too young. It's not the shifting that I'm referring too, it's real transmission problems. At least that's what I've heard from my friend (a huge Honda fan). The automatic transmission has a bad habit of failing. Same goes with the Prelude I think. Anyways I think for the mileage on the car, the price is a little high.

thats the problem...everything in the area in my price range and year is about 120k - 130k...plus is still blue books at $7,615

any other input

As for it being a rental or not...I think there is a section "fleet" for rental cars.

fyleow...do u have any info on that problem...the JD powers review was giving 5/5 and 4/5 reliability even after 3 years

That's for 6th gen Accords ('98-'02) and 5th (I think?) gen Preludes ('97-'01?). The 5th gen Accord V6 has no major issues that I'm aware of. And yes, Camrys suck balls. I really dislike the one my parents got as far as driveability ('00).

I don't browse honda forums all that often so I can't help you. However try posting and asking other people's opinion on Honda Tech. They should be able to tell you about the transmission problems.

Thanks for clearing that up 🙂

I will say though I think you'd be better off with a 4-banger Accord. The one you're considering, albeit a V6, is nothing to write home about. Honestly, you're gaining little to none over a similar 4 cylinder model (besides more expensive maintenance, poorer mileage and possibly more expensive insurance).
