Hey guys,
my gf's backpack was stolen this weekend out of her car, and it had a spare key to her car in it. So now she has to get her locks changed. Anyone know how much that costs?

Maybe you'd be better off phoning your local locksmith. prices probably differ depending what planet you live on.

car? doh. better phone the dealer then.

what PLANET i live on? uhhmmm... earth? she bought her car used. I think she should just sell the car in a different city and buy a new one that doesnt suck.

I was joking when I said planet.. I meant province/state/country.

Well used or not, a ford dealer will have parts for a ford, and toyota for toyota, and so on.. get the picture? 😉

well yah... aso she has a BMW so parts will be more expensive. (its like an 89 i think) Has anyone ever done anything like this before?

Just have them rekeyed. Had an old Toyota done a couple years ago, cost about $100 for 2 doors, trunk, and ignition.

what does "rekeyed" mean? is that the same thing as having the locks replaced? sorry im such a n00b

No, they just make the existing locks match a new set of keys. Locks work by little pins inside allowing the right key to turn, and the wrong key is held by the same pins. They just shuffle the pins around, match them to a key, and you're good to go.

A locksmith will charge anywhere from $30 - 70 per lock. Depends on how broke the guy is. 😉

Rekeyed means changing the key pattern. So she'll need new keys, old ones won't work anymore. Cheaper then replacing the locks.

thought of a better idea. Increase the insurance coverage. wait til it gets stolen. hopefully you will get the money.

rofl. well, she doesnt always have her key in there. she stopped at her apartment to grab something real quick, and didnt lock her door. someone saw this and grabbed her bag. she saw him running with it as she was walking back towards her car. this will teach her to lock her doors form now on. to top all this off... she lost her cell phone today and that phone is on my plan. sigh this weekend blows.
