See here.

I've got this feature on my Prius 2004, and it's on the new Lexus's. It's cool. I walk up to the car in the dark, and when I get to within 1 metre of the car, the interior lights come on. And when I touch the door handle, it unlocks. The whole time the key is still in my pocket.

(My Prius goes one step further though. I can start the car with the key in my pocket. Pix in my previous thread here.)

That's a sweet option. I wonder if I could wire up something custom for my Accord.....

Yeah, I've got an accord too. I wonder what a custom option would run :)

Infiniti has had that option on the FX for a while now.
Good to see other manufacturers catch up.

No, fingers are not going to get cut off. You have to understand how it works, the systems (BCM) of the vehicle detects a inductance on the key, then the system determines that that is the correct key for that vehicle. Then the BCM puts the system ready, and once your hand or any other hand (fingers, etc) gets close to the IR detector sensor, or and ultrasonic sensor the system opens the door. It not your fingers it recongnizing.

Yea, you really have to wonder how secure it is...

If someone figured out the frequency/output that these are running on, and made a "universal key" then they could take anyone's car with this, and not even need to mess with ignition tampering, or hot-wiring.

Which car company do you work for?

I'd like to see it recognize your fingerprints. That would be cool but may lead to fingers being cut off.

This isn't exclusive to imports now, it's available (standard maybe?) on the new Caddy convertable and will be available on the new Corvette.

I imagine it's very secure. They wouldn't make it easily hackable like IR remote unlock (which no one uses anymore)

Why would anyone want to have their doors open when they walk up to their car? I would imagine this is especially dangerous for women because someone could be hiding on the otherside waiting for her to walk to the car, and it would just open up a can of nasty worms. I like the old fashion way to opening one door at a time by hand.

then again, it could be argued the other way is the woman is being chased and this technology would actually save her life. Either way, it's got to be customizable so that the way the doors opened can be changed.

also, as others have already pointed out, the frequency can be easily copied...which means easier way to steal cars. Not a good thing.

I'm sure its more complex than just a frequency key. Its probably encrypted digital data coming from the key itself that changes everytime you use it.

So when I'm unloading groceries, my 2 year old will be able to start my car?

Why do I see some serious lawsuits cropping up over this???
