I brought my car to the dealer for brake service today and decided to have my non-working window examined as well. Estimate for repairing the window (replace power window motor and regulator) was $375! I said no thanks because it was on the passenger side, so it wasn't important.

Later on, my wife commented that it was nice to have the passenger window fixed. I went "Huh?" Turns out that whatever the mechanic did to diagnose the "problem," he also accidentally fixed it

This sure helps to defray the $100 :| brake job (turned front rotors).

Do you use the dealer service department for non-warranty repairs?
 
I had to repair all four of my power window motor and regulators. :|

I didn't know who else to go to other than a dealer and no one could give me any ideas.

Yeah--I know how you feel. I had that done twice before, but fortunately under warranty. Why kind of car do you drive? Mine is an Olds Intrigue. It's a great car, but the power windows and brakes seem to be problematic.

 
I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. I dropped ~1700 on the windows, 2100 on a transmission rebuild and ~400 on a four wheel alignment and four new tires.

All in the last month. :|

I'm currently back DEEP in debt where i was slowly climbing out from.

:Q It sounds like all the crap happened right when your warranty expired! I have to point out that my 1998 Intrigue has been almost problem free (in case American car bashers post here). I take it you won't be buying another Pontiac. I would consider another Olds when mine croaks, but the morons at GM killed the only decent division they had, except for Cadillac.

To be honest with you, I don't expect to ever buy domestic again. 🙁 I had problems with a Mercury in the past as well.

    '78 Lincoln Town Car Purchased in '88 w/80k and run till dead in '95 RIP, loved it!
They all had power windows, seats and door locks. I had to repair the clutch in the passenger side rear door on the '77 Town Car, which cost me nothing but 1 hr's labor on my part. I did that the first week I owned it. The rest of the cars NEVER had any problems with any of the windows, door locks or seats for as long as I owned them, and I bought them all WELL used in the first place! I'll keep buying Fords until they let me down...

You do know the only thing different between an olds and a pontiac/chevy/buick is just sheetmetal right? Everything else is identicle.

btw, why the hell would you go to a dealer for brake work out of warranty?

 
WTF is with those prices?! Earlier this year or late last year the door lock on the maxima was sticking for a day or so. Mrsskoorb brought it in and they said they'd need around $300 or something silly to replace the locking mechanism. I said screw that you can climb over the passenger seat. WHen she brought the car home I gave it a healthy dose of WD40. No problems since.

I'm not so sure spraying WD40 in my transmission would make it all better.

On my Mercedes Benz, sometimes when the special tools or equipment cost exceeds the repair.

On my Ford Escort GT, No I have all the tools I need to service the little ah heck.

Sounds like you spend more in repairs on your car in one month than I did for the entire 4 years I owned my '91 Grand Prix (bought in '97 w/ 146k miles, sold in '01 with about 250k)

Edit:
To help you restore some faith in domestics, my '02 Dakota has had only one minor problem (cracked hose for the emmissions system) and my dad's '99 Ram has only had a failed oil pressure sensor.
 
Ive heard a lot about this problem with power windows failing but since its NEVER happened to me since 1988 and Ive had nothing but GM products (Pontiacs, 1 for 9 years, 1 for 3 years and a used Oldsmobile for over 4) Let me ask you people "JUST WHAT DO YOU DO TO THESE THINGS?" Slam the door with windows moving, use them as bench vises or what?

PS: NEVER go to a dealers for out of warranty repairs unless you love throwing away money. I think ORNERY and I agree wholeheartedly on this subject (even though he drives FORDS) 😀

I've been wondering that myself. It seems like people that have problem cars ALWAYS have problem cars, and the people that don't, never have problem cars.
