YACT-Isuzu Rodeo engine sludge

Well, I recently bought a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo with only 66,000 miles on it from a co-worker. I paid very little for it and it needed some work (which I did most of myself) but I had an oil leak fixed yesterday at a mechanic that I trust and the timing belt replaced. The mechanic told me that there was a fair amount of sludge built up in the engine (he says this is usually an indication that the oil was not changed regularly). I'm fairly pissed off at the woman I bought the vehicle from but there is nothing I can do about it now (she moved out of state).

Anyway, they are telling me that they can run a cleaning agent through the engine with a machine they have at the shop. Costs about $100, which isn't an issue, but it may also cause the lifters to make more noise after the procedure is completed.

As an alternative they suggest that I change the oil every 1000 miles for the next 5 or 6 oil changes to see if that helps clear up some of the gunk in there.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions? Alternatives? Or should I just drive it into the ground and not worry about it since it is paid for? Obviously, I want to keep it in good running condition and I want it to be a good reliable vehicle that I won't have to sink a bunch of money into (more than I already have anyway).

People not doing oil changes isn't cool! I know somebody with a honda passport and they went 10-11k before getting it done. They just couldn't be bothered.

I think that I would just change the oil every 2k miles for the next 3-4 times and call it good. I doubt there is much if any damage, if you are concerened you could always get the compression checked.

My sister didn't change the oil in her car for the 1st 60k miles (ouch), my wife only changed hers every 5k, I start having panic attacks if I go over 3k.

Thanks, this is kind of what I was thinking. The compression is fine and the shop said that there doesn't appear to be any damage to internal components (indicating that she didn't run it low on oil).

I also have panic attacks if I go over the mileage between oil changes. My Maxima needs a change in fact-getting it done this weekend.

I recommend changing the oil whenever it gets dirty, black, for the next 10-15K miles or until it stays clean for at least 3K miles.

I would also recommend diesel oil, like 15w40, but it might be too thick if you live in a colder climate.

This has worked for my customers and me in the past.

Auto-RX...thats all I can recommend. Works great, and better than the flushings machines that the shop uses. The chemicals that shops use in those machines can be very harsh on seals.

Auto-RX

Bob Is The Oil Guy Bob Is the Oil Guy is a great resource for all things oil, I find it a very informative site/forum.
