YACT: Is this the latest trend of getting your car jacked...

2 of my coworkers had their car's ransacked of recent.. and guess what they take.. just the removeable faceplate .. not even the whole head unit of the stereo..

My coworker claudia had hers taken over night. She had other things in teh car, not they took the removable face plate..

In my sense, her stereo doesnt work without the right faceplate, if not the system wont turn on, it was an expensive HU, and they only took the faceplate. My aiwa has that feature, i cant plug my face plate into another aiwa unit (same model) and it wont work.

So this begs to question.. is there a new scam going around..

Apart from 2 coworkers, i know several ppl in LA who have lost their "face plates". Nothing else has been stolen..

any clues>

By the way my aiwa isnt in my focus.. i cant figure out if I want to put it in or get a used MP3 cd unit for my focus that will keep the lines of the interior as it is.

TGG

Is it true that if you get either your faceplate or deck stolen you can get the other replaced from the company? I've heard of this and hopefully i won't have to test the theory..

true but they dont touch anything else, the door is pryied open with a slim jim, and that's about it.. no broken windows nothing.. they take the HU face plate..

its weird i tell you..

I would say a 14 yr old is doing this but these incidents took place around differnet parts of LA county.

claudia's uncle who owns are Audio install place had put in her sound system, its an expensive 500 dollar HU, and what she said (she stopped by his shop this morning when she found her car was broken into) was that it was more expensive for him to get the face plate and have it reset for her system .. so he is giving her a new HU today.. and sending the old one back.

seriously............ leaving the face plate in is kind of defeating the purpose of the face plate 😕

That's what I was going to say. THe whole point of a removable face plate is that you REMOVE it when you leave the car. Even if you just stick it in the glove box or something, at least it's out of view. If you leave it on there, there's nothing stopping someone else from Removing it. Maybe they were just trying to help because they thought the owner forgot to remove it themselves.

Yeah, no kidding... what's the point in getting it if you're not going to use it.

Don't put it in the glovebox - it's better than leaving it on but it's also the FIRST place a thief will look. Personally I got bored of removing mine and since the HU is only worth $130 if they want to take it they can go for it. Crime in my area is decent anyway (other than all the illegals hanging around!).

No removable faceplate for me.
Eclipse. 1 year theft warrenty. 🙂

does that include it being stolen under the warranty 🙂

Yes, thats why its called theft warrenty. 3 year parts n labor, 1 year theft. When mine was stolen it cost me 6 n change or so for a exact replacement. 6 n change covered shipping.

I always just stuck my under the seat. I stopped bringing it inside becau'se I'd always forget to bring it back out with me when I got in my car.
