YACT: Is Hyundai that bad? (Tiburon)

I'm looking for a new car and have always had my eye on a Tiburon. It has very nice styling and I heard it handles very well. It's also priced nicely too in my opinion.

What's your take on Hyundai and the Tiburon?

I own a 2k3 v6 tiburon that's fully loaded (i think it is called the sports 3 package with the sunroof 17" wheels, spoiler and leather seats)...got it out the door for 19k...I have about 6k miles on it and couldn't be happier with it...very fast, with an outstanding warranty.

i like the styling of the new tiburon. but from what i heard although the engine produces 200hp, a fraction of that gets to the wheels. basically the car isnt so efficient and therefore not so fast

Hyundai cars no longer suck, but Hyundai resale value is still crap. If you finance a new one, you'll be upside down for like the first half of the loan term.

With that in mind, buy a slightly used one if you can find a good non-rental. The second owner doesn't get the same awesome warranty as the first owner, but I'm pretty sure the second owner still gets something. Only take that new car warranty in to consideration if you're sure you'll keep it for 100,000 miles. (And get gap coverage if you finance a new one!)

I'm Canadian so we have different packages, but the car is pretty much the same.

I'm seeing in the specs 172HP for the V6 and 138 for the I4.

Good choice...Hyundai is making very nice cars these days. Its like an RSX with a Korean personality.

It's like an RSX only without the good looks, power and quality.

Hyundai's nowhere near as bad as it used to be, but it's still not exactly topping the reliability charts.

The Tiburon is one of their better vehicles. It's a little underpowered IMO (only 172 HP from the V6 and it's not light for its size) but it looks pretty good and I've read the handling is decent.
One of the worst problems with Hyundais, though, is that their resale is definitely bad. As thegonagle said, a used Tib might be a better bet if you can get a good loan rate.

LoL!!!

For me, it will be really hard to get over the image I have of the first Hyundais I saw in 1984. There was a group of them driving in a conovy around Orange County. They were fresh imports, only distributor plates. 2 of them were smoking like they had blown valve stem seals.

I've never even considered a Hyundai since then.

Not sure what you're getting at? Is it fun to drive around in the same car as everyone else? I don't plan on selling my car anytime soon either....oh, and I think 25mpg is pretty good for a V6.

What does a Tiburon cost new? You can buy an RSX for under $20k. Even the Type-S is only $23k.

Yes, I can get an RSX Type-S for about the same price as a V6 Tiburon. Problem is I think it's a tad small and 2 of my cousins already have them! Also, from what I've heard in my province, the RSX Type-S is one of the most expensive car to insure. But I'm sure the Tiburon is up there too.

The RSX is a MUCH better car (especially the S), but if you are good at haggling, you should be able to drive the price of the Tiburon down a lot more than the Acura.

Don't let the fact that your cousins have RSXs drive you away from them. They're fun little cars and if you're buying new they should be a no-brainer choice over the Hyundai IMO.

Where can you get a type S for under 20k? I seriously doubt this. Also, my Tibron costs me $1350/yr to insure ($500 deductible, 22, no accidents, no tickets)

Its a nice looking car but as others have said, its weak for its weight, poor gas milage, poor resale value.

I wouldn't spend 19K for that car.
My choice would be: Slightly USED.......

~$12K 99-00 Civic Si. Great looking car, great gas milage, as fast if not faster than the Tiburon, great resale value.
~$12-15K Celica GTS. Same attributes as the Civic Si only faster.

I love the RSX-type S too but they are a little more expensive and cost more to insure.

I'm pretty sure I saw a RSX Type-S for 28K Canadian. I think it was new, but I'm not 100% sure. I saw it on an Acura lot.

Pricing schemes may be different in the US and Canada. I don't know.

Yes, I test drove the RSX-S a couple times right after it came out and it is a very nice, refined, fun car to drive. I love that close ratio 6 speed gearbox. I can't imagine the Tiburon comes anywhere near the level of the RSX in any respect.

I was looking at a used 2001 Civic SiR. Too bad it was in a pretty bad accident or else I would have picked that up. I'm looking for other SiRs though.

Celica never really was a car I was too interested in. But I still would consider it.

Be sure to look at insurance before buying a car. I may be paying 0% for 5 years, but my insurance is over $1400/year. I would have bought a WRX if I knew what insurance would cost me 😛.
