Every time I see these things, not the 2007 model but maybe 1-2 years old, I can't help but notice something funky about the rear tires. And not the smaller BMW SUV, the bigger boxier ones. The rear tires seem to angle inwards at the top. But how could this be? Wouldn't the tires wear unevenly? Is this some sort of optical illusion?

This is not an isolated case; it's every one that I see. It's like the arrow in the FedEx logo, I can't unsee this.

(I looked, and can't find anything good at Google Images.)

Have you noticed the same thing on the Z3? The Z3 had really severe rear tire camber and I used to notice it every time I saw one.

Many cars and even suvs/trucks have slight rear negative camber. Some are just more noticeable than others.

Nope, I haven't noticed the Z3 but I will keep my eye out. Since the X5 is so high off the ground it's probably why I notice it so quickly.

Yes, the rear tires will wear more on the inside with negative chamber. In order to make these heavy vehichles handle better they implemented more rear rear negative chamber than the usual car. I own a BMW E39 with strong negative chamber and a set of rear tires will last only 12K miles.
