YACT: If I jack my rear up and spin a tire....

What should happen? I'm not aware that it has a locker or lsd so I jacked it up today, put it in neutral and spun a tire, both tires spun the same direction, does that mean it's locked in one way or another?

Thanks,
Kevin

It's ok to do that, but make sure that both tires are the same direction when you let it down or else you will have to take it in for an alignment and balancing.

You do not have a locker unless it is a drag car.

You can have an Open rear or a Posi style.

DON'T START THE CAR AND PUT IT IN DRIVE.

Just jack up the rear and spin one tire by hand. If the other tire goes the opposite way then it is a open rear. If it goes the same then you probable have a posi style.

I started the car :x and put it in drive :x Driving = me not knowing, starting = have to start it to put it into neutral.

I am thinking of an after market locker. It's a Cherokee and the guy that had it before me decided he should do everything to make it look like he drove it off pavement 😛 If I open it up and take a looksy should it be easy enough to tell if I have a locker or not? Me = teh car nub

to tell if you have an auto locker drive around the block and as you come to corners take your foot off the gas, if you hear it ratcheting you have a autolocker. assuming your talking about the rear diff. if your talking about your front axle don't do that bad things will happen. make sure you know what your doing if you pull those covers off, you'll get a bath in gear oil and will need replacement gaskets. PSA: gear oil smells bad and nobody will want to be your friend if you get any on you.

Lift up the rear end with both tires off the ground and spin a tire. With a locker, both will move in the same direction, otherwise it will turn in the opposite direction. Another option is to lift one rear tire and spin it, if you here a very obvious racheting, you probably have a automatic locker. If it does not spin at all you have a fully locked rear end and should hear your tires chirping every time you drive around a corner.

You can also visually see a locker, limited slip or open differential.
