YACT: ICE install advice needed

I should have known better than to let my brother organise everything for his ICE install.

He wants to install a sub and seperates amps for the main speakers.

My bro had conveniently forgotten to get any signal leads - and instead had bought this absurd wiring kit with 4 AWG cable and a death-trap inline gold-plated fuseholder. Of course, this didn't include a power feed for the new head unit.

As to getting the old head unit out - he assured me that he knew how to do it. 'You just stick a credit card under the unit and it just pops out'. 'Umm. You sure? The last 3 cars we installed stuff in, the head-units screwed in under the fascia'. 2 hours of swearing later, the OEM head unit is still firmly in place.

Wiring kit came with such a short ground wire that it won't reach an existing ground point. That's when I realised a) We don't have any working HSS drill bits - I did eventually make a hole with a completely wrecked bit, but I blued it in the process, b) We've lost my Dad's old set of taps, and c) We don't have any machine screws, let alone self-tappers.

2 questions:
1) HTF do you get a head unit out of a VAG car (Seat)? It's got 2 little slots towards the bottom of the control panel, presumably you stick something in there - but I've never seen head units that don't screw in so i've no idea what to do, or even if you need a special tool to do it.

2) What am I going to do about grounding? I reckon I might just sick the dremel at the paint around my hole, and just hold the terminals on with a nut and bolt - not very elegant, but I suppose it would work. I wonder whether it would be easier just to make up a new ground lead and run it to somewhere ready made.

There's nothing worse than trying to do a job without the correct tools.

You guys weren't boy scouts I take it?

Oh tell me about it.

I told him right at the start - we don't the right tools, or the right cables - blah, blah. It wasn't going to work. In the end we decided just to switch the head units and put the amps in without the wiring. We still didn't get very far.

The other problem is that someone has lost all my tools - I had all the right stuff, proper wire strippers, crimper, heat shrink tubing, nice socket set, soldering iron, etc. and some one has lost/disposed of them all. My fault for not keeping them at my house.

Goddamit. It gets worse. We put most of the cables in - but to do so we had to take the glove compartment off. We both forgot that the 'passenger airbag disable' switch was in there. And although the ignition was off for the entire procedure, the air bag system noticed that the switch had been disconnected and now the airbag light is stuck on.

Grr.

LMAO! You should have at least gotten a quote from a professional installer. Then you can at least see if the price is worth getting it done right without aggravation. I did my first install myself. Nowadays, I get a pro to do it. It's not worth it to me.

your brother is right, just cut up an old credit card, or aol CD into strips and slide it into the holes you see on the stock HU. then slide the HU out. its held in with a series of clips. let me know if you have any other questions.

Well, I did tell my bro that it would be far less pain just to pay someone to do it. I sure as hell won't be doing it again - I've had quite enough.

The head unit has about 2 dozen flying leads, instead of sockets on it. Guess what - not enough space behind the dash for all the flying leads. And that's before we've routed the phono leads up behind the dash.
Then realising that the ISO connectors in the car were non-standard and I had to dick around swapping the wires around into the 'standard' arrangement.

The worst bit is, he wants to change the incumbent in-door speakers/crossovers for some better ones. I've told him that he can do that himself.

Nope. We tried that for over 2 hours with absolutely no success. It wouldn't budge, even though we could feel the clips on the strips.

Went out and bought the proper keys - took less than 5 seconds to get the head unit out with those.
