I think its time.... almost 80K without one.. but it would be nice to have one.

So i got the pin info and stuff.. question is how many ppl have installed a tach before.. or are you skilled enough to help me install it in my car. I know where it goes, so its a matter of hooking it up..

The focus doesn't come with a tach standard? hmmmm that suxors...are you trying to install an oem one in your current gauge cluster? It takes some guts to take apart the gauge cluster.

funny thing i am competent in "soldering" .. i am just not good in drilling holes. The problem is if I do it, i end up spending a lot of time making sure its perfect...

bah..

I got the pin outs for my focus, one of these days i will run a wire to teh ECU and crimp it in.

Hmm.. I wonder how I could add a tach to my '81 Chevy PU.

It doesen't have fancy computers with pinouts and the like.. inductive perhaps? hmm.

Not really...getting it out is always tough the first time, but taking it apart is fairly straightforward.

I think the '02 and beyond didn't have tachs. My '01 has a tach.

Nope, sorry. The only tach that will run from those impulses is a stock Ford tach. Aftermarket tachometers will have their own pick-ups for engine speed that you'll have to install.

Of course, you could always try tapping an aftermarket tach into those leads and then wiring in the appropriate companants to adjust the signal to something that the tach recognises. Chances are though that an aftermarket tachometer will not recognise the signals from the stock Ford ECU.

The only simple way would be to find a Focus guage cluster with the tach in it and replace your entire guage cluster. Of course, that's a little expensive and replacing the guage cluster (and hence the odometer) will put an "Odometer Discrepancy" flag on your car's title when you try to sell it.

One wire to the distributer side of the coil, one hot wire and one ground wire. Piece of cake.
Edit: Also they usually have one wire going to the dash light wiring so you can dim the tach light with the dash lights.

You do not need a tach in a f*cking Focus. It is a rice accessory in any car with a sewing machine for an engine. Tachs are for racing and Focuses are definitley not for racing. I have had tachs in every standard transmission vehicle I have ever owned and have never ever looked at them while shifting. The fact that you have driven 80K miles without one and deem it necessary now only confirms that it is merely a ricessory.

Ok....now that I have that off my chest you need to be careful when installing tachs in fuel injected and computer controlled engines. Follow the intructions to the letter.

Agree with you for once.

I like my tachometer in my Scion TC. I shift pretty close to 3000rpm and have been able to get 25-28 miles per gallon in city driving doing this. Sometimes with the radio on, it is hard to hear exactly when you should shift and also newer engines are so smooth, sometimes 4500rpm feels like 2500rpm.

Focus doesn't have a distributor or coil. It has electronic coil packs. No signal from the coil since there's no coil as such.
