Its a '92 Civic LX, manual, 190k miles

I was backing out of a driveway, heard a crack/grinding sound, didnt think much of it, thought it might be cuz of the snow/ice or somethin, I drive forward about 50 feet, stop at a stop sign, and when I let out on the clutch to go all I hear is grinding. hmm, put it in reverse...grinding. The engine is running fine, I can shift through all the gears fine, but I cant go forward or backward, and I hear the grinding/cracking. It made the sound when we pulled the car around the block in neutral too. My cv joints/shaft were bad, and needed replacing before, but I hadnt planned on doing it. Could it be they just plain broke off??If thats the case, how much will it cost to replace? There goes all my christmas $$...:(

A couple hundred dollars. I just purchased remanufactured joints for my 1998 200sx, an they cost 120 bucks for each side :Q Add that plus labor, and you're gonna have one hell of a christmas :p

If your CV joints were already bad, then you probably broke a half-shaft. That sounds pretty consistent with what you describe.

if the problem really is your CV's, should be able to get a reman'd halfshaft for next to nothing. OEM probably considerably more.. and if you cant do the work yourself.. more yet.

Look under the car at the half shafts. If they are broken go buy a remanufactured one from Autozone or somewhere. All you need is a lift some sockets/wrenchs and a pry bar to change it. Should take you about 2 hours your first time (I recently did the same on a 96 Civic).

My suspension was recently kaput.

I got a CV joint for $65:D ...two control arms for $30 a piece, and still need to get a special type of bearing.

What do you can that bearing that allows the wheel to pivot..it is connected to the top of the wheel well
