these days you can get lots of choices with the employee discounts...

And only on some US cards. The only brand that has any cars I would want to own would be Saab which are still out of my price range with employee discounts. Mazda is a division of Ford but doesn't give any discounts, Ford is only discounting the cars it can't sell otherwise becasue they are overpriced. Ford and Chevy really don't make any cars that can compete with the ones I've selected that they are offering discounts on.

For that price there are so many more interesting used cars, why would you want an Accord or Scion?

Mostly because the more 'interesting' cars that you speak of our probably European imports that are expensive to maintain. I don't want a BMW at this point in my life, same with an Audii/Lexus/etc. because there are hefty upkeep costs that a Scion/Accord/Mazda3 don't have. I'm considering the total cost of ownership here, not just the initial purchase price. I'm still in college - there will be plenty of time to buy nicer cars later.

Right now Mazda is running some pretty lucrative deals on the 6's. A 4 cyl Mazda 6 can be had in your price range depending on options.
