YACT: I hate letting shops work on my vehicles

About 6 months ago Lola was driving our Jeep to work when she called me saying it was shaking badly. I had known that the rear driveshaft was going to need a u-joint sooner than later, I figured that was the problem and told her to take it to a shop since I didn't want her driving home and chancing it grenading and creating a huge mess.

Anyways, today I'm under the Jeep putting in the front driveshaft for winter and I do an inspection of everything and notice that the yoke of the rear driveshaft has a crack in it. Hmm... Then I notice that it's the same u-joint the shop replaced.

Barring some massive damage, I cannot think of another way the the yoke could be cracked except improper installation and I know the shop is going to deny iy.

Grr... Another $250 for a new driveshaft.

Must've had a hydraulic press to crack a yoke.

Last time I took my truck to a shop, they put a hole in one of my cv boots for me.... grrrr

$250? should be able to find a used one for $50 depending on the model. I suppose having the DS place weld a new yoke on would be out of the question LD

Not stock, it's a custom shaft.

Who wants to fix that ****** themselves? Even if you have the ability and time, it isn't something you want to do unless you do it for a living.

But it is something that most who DO have the skills prefer to do themselves...to avoid the exact situation as described in the OP.

95% of shops don't give a $hit about your car. They do the work as quickly as possible, use the cheapest parts, and cut any corner they can to get it done quicker. More jobs done in one day = more money for them. In other words, they have no incentive to "do it right."

Their goal is to get the work done well enough to get you out the door happy and driving for a few miles, so that when you bring it back to them with a complaint, they say "oh, well it was fine when you left the shop last week." This is one reason I learned to do most things myself.

Of course, there are a few good ones, but they are getting increasingly hard to find - forced out of business by all the rest emphasizing quantity over quality. :(

I agree. If you really care about your car then you have to do this kind of work yourself. No one else gives a crap about your car. They only care about your money.
