YACT: I didn't know they made a V8 Porsche

Was driving home and saw a car for sale in a neighbors yard. 1986 Porsche 928S for $4k. Did a google, and found out that it was a V8. Interesting. Anyone know anything about the 928S?

It was heavy, and not very popular, so they EOL'd it. In the mid 80's, porsche's quality control was not as good as it is today, so 928's spent a lot of time in the shop, which added up to a LOT of $$.

I'd be careful with that. At the very least, hire a good porsche mechanic to take a look at it.

It was a nice car. The majority of them were automatics. There are some rare manuels out there though. It came in a few different flavors over the years but they were all V8s. It was mainly intended as a cruiser. You can cruise all day at high speed in comfort. While not my favorite Porsche the few I have been in have been pretty nice. The later model year GTS ones are the best.

Actually they made them up until '95. It was somewhat popular too I think. At least I have seen a bunch.

Very fast cars, holds the world speed record for a production car, or did I can't remember right now.

It may have at one time, but that would have been a logn time ago. Stock they are fast as hell. But not nearly as quick as a 959, which came out in '88 or '89.

Probably not such a fast car after all these years though. The guy who owns the house is a county officer who I know a little bit so I will drop by tomorrow and see what the deal is on the car. I know he has a 944 and old 911, bu the 928 must have been hidden somewhere. It looked decent, although I am not a fan of white cars.

Not super car fast but faster then just about anything else out there. Stats for the last model year GTS ('95) went something like

Displacement:329 cu.in. or 5,397cc
Horsepower: 345@5,700 rpm
Torque: 369 lb-ft@ 4,250 rpm
0-60mph: 5.14 seconds
0-1/4 mile: 13.7s
Top Speed: 171

EDIT = Just noticed you were talking about an '86. Looks like the stats for that would be around

Displacement 4957 cc / 302.5 cu in
Power 288.0 bhp @ 5750 rpm
Torque 302.4 ft lbs @ 2700 rpm
Top Speed 143.0 mph
0 - 60 mph 5.9 seconds
0 - ¼ mile 14.2 seconds

Which is pretty freaking fast for a car that weighs close to 3600 pounds. The late model GTS's are still pretty pricey though if they are in good condition.

There was a game - I think called Chase HQ - where you were undercover cops in a 928 and you had to ram people off the road. It was sweet.

I considered one for a while but thought better of it as they are notoriously unreliable. You'd be better off getting an early-mid 80's 911 if you really want a Porsche. Much more reliable cars than the 928s for the most part.

I've always liked the 928's, although many Porsche "Purists" dismissed it as it wasn't a rear engine, air cooled engine.

To this day, I'd love a late vintage 928 5 speed as a highway cruiser.

Ever seen the movie "Risky Business?"

That was a 928.

The purpose of the 928 was a luxury GT touring car. It had a little ballz and a lot of comfort. Designed to get you to and from a journey comfortably and quickly. The 911 was a more powerful and cheaper car and the 944/968 more tossable and fun and half the price (the 944 Turbo was discontinued due to embarrasing 911 drivers, Porsche's flagship)...

There are some very fast 'drag cars' based on the 928.

Had a real desire for a 928 S4 at one time, chickened-out.

Fast, thirsty and comfortable.

The major weakness of the m/s was it's clutch. It's a Sachs twin disk and will not tolerate drag race like starts, it will over heat and slip. I maybe wrong but as I recall, replacement parts ran $800 seven years ago.

With the head lights up it looks like an insect, wierd but cool in a way.....

I used to love the looks of this car (back in the day when I was a young impressionable youth-wait, I'm still impressionable when it comes to cars...). It's not that they are unreliable it's just that everything is so friggin expensive to repair on them and even general maintenance things will kill you if you don't have the money to put into it. Also, parts might be kind of hard to find. I wouldn't want one as a daily driver unless you had a backup car for when it does need repair.

You don't live in Eugene Oregon do you?

There's a white one for sale on Coburg Road here in Eugene as well.

When those first came out they were BIG $$$$.

Now they seem to be selling CHEAP!

The 928 was designed as an Autobahn car, the kind that can go down a freeway at 120mph+ all day with no problems. Awesome high-speed cruiser. I wouldn't mind having one. Drawbacks are very poor gas mileage and relatively high maintenence costs.
