YACT: How to or cost to replace a wheel lug?

one lug, out of five in my rear driver side wheel, has the threads stripped and the nut no longer goes on. how much does a tire shop charge to replace a lug? how difficult is it to replace it myself? i'm mechanically competent, has done all the work on the car myself, but never replaced a lug before.

the car is a 96 maxima btw.

he'd need the dies for it however and those aint cheap.

is it a matter of just taking off wheel and rotor, then pound the lug out and insert new one?

Nope, that won't work. A stud is usually a couple of bucks give or take and if you have any mechanical skills it can be replaced in less than 30 minutes including jacking up the car...that is if you can get to the back of the hub.

i'm mechanically competent, have air tools, and do all the car work myself but like i said i never had to replace a lug before. how does the lug stay in place? does it screw in from the back or something?

my parents have a 95 maxima and had to replace a wheel lug. the guys at costco did it for free so it can't be that hard or take too much time. the part is a few bucks from the dealer.

They usually just press in. They have serrated shanks to dig into the hub. Knock the old one out, put the new one in and then use an extra lug nut to slowly pull it into place. You might have to add some washers or other spacers as you get close to bottoming it out if there aren't threads down the stud far enough. It is easy.

Not very hard and expensive.

Once you get the old one out, get a spacer that is about a half inch tall and slightly larger around (inside diameter) than the lug, then just use the lug nut to pull the new lug into place!

I've done it.... 20 times. Was easier than finding a single fscking lugnut that fit the ones we had.

thanks guys. yes it was very easy, especially with an impact wrench to pull the lug in. and it costed $0.99 at autozone.
