Shouldn't be much. The only large extra part in the transfer case, but they aren't that big.

Essentially none. The only real interior space difference is going from FWD to RWD.

Most will fit right inside the trunk, but you can't always get it closed. Use a bungee cord.

noooo.... the extra hardware is either a front or rear axle, depending on what the original 2wd vehicle was, a transfercase behind the transmission, and an extra driveshaft.

And even then the only space lost is normally a larger center console.

Wrong. AWD VW's and Audi's have smaller trunks/hatch cubic space available than the FWD variants.

FWD has the most space, RWD and AWD have equal space loss compared to FWD. T-cases are tiny, even the one's in full size 4x4 trucks. I can carry mine by myself and the driveshaft is very short and low enough not to effect the cabin space compared tot he 2wd versions.

There's significant space lost from having the engine mounted length-wise too. Needs a longer hood which translates into a shorter cabin for a given total length.

Since he asked about the difference between AWD and RWD not FWD, that extra hatch/trunk space is already taken up by the RWD hardware. I think you mis-read his post.
