YACT: How much for a typical oil change + tune up?

I'm a car n00b and I need to get a long awaited tune up and oil change. How much should I expect to pay for both? I have a 1999 Honda Accord EX (4 cylinder model).

A "tune up" is the most overcharged thing you can have done to a car. Especially if you have it done at a high priced shop or dealer.

What all are they doing and what are they looking to charge you for?

Look in the manual and see what they suggest you have done at that given milage.

You probably don't need a "tune up". The term has changed drastically over the years... Depending on what plugs you have in there, and the mileage.... Just change your PCV, Fuel Filter (i feel like i'm forgetting an important filter .... oh duh... air filter...), get yourself an oil change, rotate tires if necessary and be happy.

Bill

Edit: The shop where I work, it costs 27.03 (including taxes) for an Oil Change and a Lube (check air pressure too)

they qouted 30 for oil change. I have 130,000 miles (roughly) and haven't gotten a tune up in a while. I've been slacking on that lol.

again, you may not even need a tune up. Check your owners manual 🙂

Still....a "tune up" is a very vauge and easily abused term. It could invovle changing out an accessory belt, new plugs, an air & oil filter, a timing belt and water pump if it hasn't been done yet (or not in a long time), flushing out radiator & transmission fluids, and a fuel injector cleaning.

Before it's said and done that could be $1,000 or more depending on the shop. Get a quote of exactly they are replacing and what they think the time will take.

I'll check it out. I drive a lot and the last time I got one, the mileage was around 65,000 I believe. I have double that so I figured it was about that time.

oil change. $20 for mobile 1 syn, $5-6 for oil filter. $1 worth of gas to go to the dump to dump the oil.

Which reminds me.. I probably should get my fuel filter looked at.

with 130k

1. timing belt & accessory belts ? - depending on where you live belts may be subject to extreme heat or cold winters.. they may be cracking
2. probably spark plugs
3. spark plug wires.. you dont really need to change them but they do rot away
4. air filter - depending on ur location, some times you may need to change this every 10-15k
5. tire rotation
6. rotor & distributor - they may be really worned out

there are bunch of other stuff but it really depends on your car.. some car dont need a lot of stuff.. some does..

timing belt only needs to be done every 90K or so on hondas, so unless he didn't have it done then, he doesn't need it done again.

Some of this has already been mentioned, But I have listed what may commonly be done in a "tune-up"

Oil: $3.99 (on sale, otherwise $4.99) per quart of Mobil 1 synthetic, 5w30 or 10w30 depending on if you are in a colder climate

Oil Filter:$2 to $7, I'd suggest either a PureOne PL14459 or a Wix/Napa 1334. Don't get a fram if you can help it. Some honda oem filters are Frams.

If it is automatic: then $4-$6 per quart for transmission fluid ATF Z1 from the dealer, you'll need 3 quarts for teh accord.

Spark Plugs are $2 each at Kragen/Schucks/Chekcers if get NGK copper ones. Platinum are more. I reccomend going only with NGK plugs in the honda engines.

Cap-$12-$18, Rotor-$5-$8, Wires-$35-$60

Fuel filter is about $15-$25 for the accord, kinda in an awkward place to replace, so not too easy to do here.

Air filter is $15-$25.

I think the 99 accords came with cabin air filters too, so thats another $20 or so.

Brake fluid flush, should be done every two years. Brake fluid is hygroscopic; it absorbs moisture over time, and water is not good for your braking. Get the rotors and pads/shoes checked out also. Adjust parking brake too.

With 130k miles, may want to think about getting new shocks put on (I like bilsteins), I bet the ones on there are worn. Also get the suspension bushings/components checked to make sure they aren't worn and/or rotted/torn. Not a bad idea to have the alignment checked and corrected if needed. Check the CV boots for tears and or wear.

Get the EGR system cleaned out. The EGR paths are known to clog with carbon on the accords. It requires removal of the fuel rail to access the EGR cover. I have a PDF with the procedure if you want to tackle this yourself.

Make sure your spare tire has air in it. And rotate/balance your tires. Check the function of all the exterior lights.

Thats about all I can think of right now off the top of my head.
