1997 Infinti I30. Same automatic transmission as a '97 Maxima. I'd like to get it serviced, which I'm assuming means a flush and a new filter? How difficult and how much $$ would it be to do this myself, and how much will it roughly cost to take this to a shop to do this?

Filter on your car Im not sure about, but a flush is easy. Cost me 50 to do my last one. 6 qts normal ATF and 6 qts Mobil1 ATF. 6 foot section of 1/2" clear pvc a zip tie and 3 milk jugs. Half an hour in time. Id def recommend doing it yourself. Also something a lot of shops cheap on b/c its pretty tough to check to see if it was done right.

I have heard some not such good things about that. ie. forcing built up crud in places it doesn't want to go. Not saying that is true, just what I have heard. I let the tranny pump do the work for me. Slight pita, cause I can only expel 2 qts at a time before I have to refill. And have to pour in through the dipstick tube. That slows things down a bit.

This is the procedure that I follow. Of course, it helps that I have a Volvo.

Not mixing anything. Just not going to pay 5 bucks a quart when it is just going to be expelled 5 minutes later when I can only pay $1.50. And I dont really care if they mix a little. Not losing much if anything. ATF is already one of the most over-engineered fluids there is.

A little? If it holds about twice that much, and you only have 6 qts of synthetic, how are you not mixing it about half and half (which is fine)?

Red, yours should just have a screen it it, rather than a 'filter'. It doesn't have to be cleaned every time. I'd drain and fill (drainplug) or flush it, and pull the pan to clean the screen every other time. I buddy of mine that works at a tranny shop says don't back flush since metal particles can cut the rubber lines. But I don't know.
