after 65,000 miles with no oil change, his 2000 dodge interpid engine is dying. the engine makes the clicking noise whenever he steps on the gas pedal.

well. too bad for him, but it is amazing.

actually, his father believes it is not needed to have oil change.
1. His father is a dumbass with a capital D.
2. If he changes it now, it's all over for that engine. Just keep it full of oil, drive it until it quits, then shoot it.
3. Did I mention his father is a dumbass?
4. I have personally seen and worked on quite a few cars that came in with 40k+ miles with the original oil and filter still in place. We generally recommended that the oil not be changed at that point. On the ones that the customer said do it anyway, every one was more noise when restarted, and expired soon after. I remember one F150 with 55k that had the original factory filter, and when the drain plug was removed, nothing would come out. Sludge showed full on the dipstick.
This was back when Ford had 6yr/60k warranty, and the guy was pissed when the factory rep refused to warranty the engine.
5. BTW, your friend, AND his father are dumbasses.
6. Last summer, a customer brought his 2002 Ranger in for service and a couple of minor warranty items. One of them was a ticking noise. The tech came up front wanting to know when the last time the oil was changed because it looked really thick when draining out. We looked it up and we had last changed it at just under 5k. The truck had 28k during this visit. After the customer finished swearing up and down that they had changed the oil at Jiffy Lube (no dice, it still had the Motorcraft filter we put on), they had receipts, etc...they told us to go ahead and changed it, against our advice.
We did, and by the time the tech pulled it around front, it was knock, knock, knocking in heaven's door, if you know what I mean.
Customer was pissed, saying it wasn't that noisey before we changed the oil. Yep, that's why we told you not to change it. No warranty.

Wow..

That almost makes me angry just reading that. How can people be so stupid?

I can't even contemplate spending all that money on a piece of machinery and then not even spending the time to keep it working like a well oiled machine..

Hmm.. That's almost interesting.. It's like people don't look at cars like machines or something, they're just.. there, to be used.

Synthetic is good for 5K miles, you're just pissing your money away. And your post makes zero sense.

I bought a jeep cherokee... I had to have the timing belt replaced early on. When I got it back from the mechanic, he commented that he'd bet the oil had never been changed up until the day the dealer got it. That was at around 70 thousand miles. Ultimately, it ended up with a little over 200,000 miles on it... the engine was still going strong - the body was all but completely gone (rust)
That car may have a chance - change the oil now.

I meant minimum :p I just use normal conventional and go 5. There's always different schools of thought about how long you should go between oil changes - most new car manuals I've read say 5K though.

Not related to the original topic but do you use 5W20 or 5W30 oil for your Accord?

Yep, then they go bitch about how the shop took advantage of them when they have high repair bills.

Off topic but in the vein of stupid people & cars...

I worked at a Subaru dealership and a lady's car came in via a tow truck due to a WAY overheated engine. Apparently it redlined while driving, but since it wasn't making any funny noises/smoke, she went ahead and drove it FOR ANOTHER HOUR or so. I didn't personally see the car, but I was told the aluminum block had been dripping hot, and the temp gauge was still redlined. I bet her husband was really happy with what she did to a new car!

Just 5w20....I know most people say "well stop using that 5w20 crap and switch over to synthetic or a heavier weight oil" but my dad buys the oil in my family.

Not oil related, but I remember another customer who brought an F150 4X4 in. One of the ones that said "4x4 Offroad" on the bedside.
It had an overdrive light blinking. Don't remember the fault code, but we did the steps in the book for that code, and it led to the MLP sensor on the tranmission.
Got approval, put it on, didn't fix it. Same code.
So we go round and round with this truck, called Ford hotline, the whole nine yards. Then, we decide, since there were no diagnostic routines left to perform, to try a new PCM (computer).
We pulled it out......and it had been muddy. Had red dirt all over it. So we got to looking around, and looked under the carpet.....it was wet, and had red mud under it.

Called the customer, and she said it had gotten stuck, and the front end sunk down to where the water level was up to the "F150" emblems on the fenders. If you've ever seen one of these trucks, you know how buried that must have been.
So she then proceeds to come in and sit down in the manager's office and raise holy hell about how long it is taking, we don't know what we're doing, etc.
Keep in mind that normal diagnostics are out the window because there's no telling where the water has gotten to.
So the manager tells her (with me standing there) that the truck wasn't designed to be submerged.
She comes back with (really snotty) "well, it says 4x4 Off ROAD!!".
I very nicely told her that yes, but it does say OffROAD, not OffSHORE.
She shut up.
After she left, the manager had tears coming out of his eyes from laughing.

And don't get me started about the chick with a Probe that hung lemons and signs all over it and drove up and down the road in front of our dealership.
Why? Because in the original Probes, it was easy to drag your feet across the rocker panel when getting in/out. So the outside of it, where there was paint instead of the plastic moulding, would get the paint worn off of it if you weren't careful. Like lots of cars do.
This car had 50k, well out of warranty, and the Ford rep had offered to fix it for free.
She wouldn't accept, wanted a new car.

Some of those disel big rig trucks can go 250,000mi+ on a single oil change. Then again, some of those rigs have multi-gallon oil sumps, and dual bypass filter setups. The more oil your sump or oil system can carry, the longer you can usually wait between oil changes, depending on how much make-up oil you have to add due to consumption, and when you do regular filter changes.
