YACT: How do you change the turn signal bulb in a civic?

So when I bought this car ('99 civic) used ~2 months ago, one turn signal bulb was clear and the other was amber -- looks really stupid. I bought a pair of amber bulbs and figured i'd just change them both.

There's no way to access the bulbs from the engine bay, apparently there's a trick to making the headlight assembly slide out (according to my honda dealer who wants to charge me $20 for labor) -- now I know it can't be too hard, but simply removing the two bolts on top of the assembly doesn't do anything.

Anyone here know how to go about doing this..? I'm guessing its the same for '96-'00 civics...

Your regular old owners manual should have instructions. No need to buy a service manual.

What the hell is all this "engine bay" and "headlight assembly" talk?

We're talking about front turn signals here... right?...

Yeah, you're right, this is probably the last time you'll need to repair anything on it...

Oh, so that's why manufacturers include manuals... they figure all the owners will pretend to be auto mechanics!

Now 99' is 6th gen, but I'm pretty sure its similar. I recently had to change my turn signal bulbs because my LED's went out. Basically you need to peel back the undercoating in the wheelwell to get to the bulb, can't get to it in the engine compartment. There should be one or two clips holding it on that you can pry off with a flathead. Then just peel back the undercoat, reach in and 'feel out' where the turn signal bulb is, then twist it to the side and slide it out.

Thanks for the tip, basically I just had to lift the car with a jack (I don't really think its necessary, I could've probably just turned the wheel to the side to get easier access, but it made things a lot easier) and remove three screws, and the undercoating came out just like you said -- pretty simple indeed.

Yeah I was gonna mention to turn the wheel all the way to the side, but a jack works. :p
