YACT: How did we get here?

Far be it from me to start another flame war between Motorists and everyone else, but Im just looking for your opinions on how you think we got to be here. Im very much in favor of the theory where a random act of driving made it possible for travel with a couple shifts of gear in between then and now. But I also believe an "almighty Public Transit" indirectly set things in motion for us early on with no intention of creating gridlock, I think it just happened through blind intersections. Plus as big as the Bus is and as old as my car is compared to others I'm not totally convinced there weren't/arn't pedestrians in far out hats we'll never know about. Thoughts and theories?
