from what I know, the advantage of RWD over FWD is on the performance side. (acceleration, handling, and all the good stuff you all have been debating many many times)

however, on a luxury car (cars like Maybach, S class, 7 series, A8, LS430, Q45, RL, and on and on and on), performance and sportiness is not the top priority, so what's the benefit of having RWD on these cars that are catered for buyers who are usually rich old men?

I disagree.. performance and sportyness ARE higher up on the list with Luxury cars.

Because two of the main advantages of FWD don't really need to be applied to luxury cars..one being cost, and the other lack of driveshaft to save space, since luxury cars tend to be big and expensive anyway.

well, ok,
I, a 21 year old college boy, am trying to think like a 50 year old man here. So my perspective may/will be a bit off.

If I am 50 year old, rich, almost retired, I can careless if my car can accelerate faster than your turbo-charged civic. All I want is a quiet cabin and a smooth ride.

any rich 50 year old man want to refute that? :)

just buy yourself a buick oldman

who says you have to be a rich 50 yearold to drive a nice luxury car anyway? if you just want a big ole boat that floats through the pavement, they make those too, and be happy in your Deville or Continentals..

you need to define the term luxury here, and if you are going to spend the money, i'd want all the speed, along /w all the conforts. all the engineering efforts that go into such, make the car luxurious and expensive.

as for fwd, torque steers really really suck. my mom had a caddy sts for 2 years, and while the car was really nice, i was wishing she would've opted for a lesser horsed, but faster 540i, or a gs400. damn michigan winter!

I would guess is kind of a "tradition" thing. Most cars in the good ol' days were RWD. Cost is not a factor as someone else mentioned. Also better weight distribution with RWD. Sportiness and I maybe a marketing gimmick in some cases. Torque steer can be minimize dramatically like Acura has done.
