YACT: How can I determine the maximum tire size that will fit on my vehicle ?

maximum tire size = Amount of fender than can be hacked to fit bigger tires / Largest tire before axle shafts, ring and pinion, or other diff. goodies explode due to the stress. If this number is less than one, get new axles! 😀

this isnt an answer to your question, but I just replaced 4 tires on my 97 gtp.

Stock tire size is 225 60 R 16.

I went to 245 50 ZR 16's and basically kept the same speedo accuracy.

Wider is BETTER

I assume 31x10.5x15's? Those are already good size tires on a Montero. If you want bigger, you probably shouldn't go much bigger than 33x12.5x15's, if those will even fit.
Bigger tires (and/or bigger wheels) can cause 3 serious problems. Two will be caused if the outside circumference of the new tires is larger than the vehicle was originally designed for. The speedometer will be off and will read slower than the actual speed and the vehicle's gearing will be longer, which will worsen acceleration. The fix for this is to install shorter gears in the differentials. The third problem is if the new wheel/tire setup is heavier than the vehicle was originally designed for. More unsprung weight, even just a little bit, will significantly worsen acceleration, braking, ride, and handling.

GTP? Is that a Pontiac? Sounds like some huge sidewalls.

What is the size difference between a P265 and a 31inch tire ?

What are the PXXX measurments ?

The first 3 digits on the tire... ie 235 is the series of the tire as well as it's tread width. I believe my 235s come out to around 9.2" of tread. Slag's 245s would be around 10" of width.

Mainly other than fitting the tire in the fender well or if you don't mind skateboard... clearing the fenders. The width of your rim as well as the stiffness of your tire's sidewalls determine the biggest (width) tire you can use. With most typical tires, you shouldn't really go more too much more than around 1 & half an inch more than your tire though you can get away with 1.75" in most cases.

ie, 245/45-16 tire on a 16x8" rim is OK.

i run a 9.5" tire on a 15x7 without issue, even when airing down. havent lost a bead yet.

Metric. P = passenger, LT = light truck.

265mm / 25.4 (conversion rate) = 10.43 inches wide

The 40/50/60/70 (etc) series rating is the ratio of the sidewall to the width of the tire. For example: 265/75/15's would translate into roughly 30x10.5x15 in English measurements.

You might want to check here

Even though I don't have a montero, I can offer some advice based on my 4wd Tacoma & Fiance's Xterra.

31's are probably the largest you will be able to fit (Stock height/suspension) without rubbing, unless you can find narrower 32's (if avail) You might want to get a more aggressive tread pattern - for example - 31 BFG MT's (mud -terrains) will look a hell of a lot bigger than BFG AT's-
Just don't expect the same on-road or wet pavement performance

The other two options would be a mild suspension lift - or
even a mild body -lift (I am not a fan of body lifts)

As far as tires go,
My normal daily driving tires are BFG 31x10.5x15 AT's - they will be replaced with 32's whenever they wear out
I have also have a set of BFG 32x11.5x15 MT's as my play tires -
