YACT: How bad is a late model mustang GT buying used?

I don't even know why I'm asking, but do these make for a decent used car or has it had the snot driven out of it and it will start burning oil soon after you buy it? It seems that if you look around $15k will get you a 2002 gt with a 5 speed and pretty low miles. 260 horsepower ain't too bad either.

And before anybody asks I've long maintained that a mustang is one of the few domestics I'd like to own, and there's no denying it's among the very best bang for buck you can get if straight end power is your desire.

One place locally is selling an 03 Mach 1 (305 HP) with 3k miles (so it's basically brand new, minus the 3k miles that were probably violated out of it) for $23.9k

not as bad as the grammar in the subject line 😉.

The mustangs are pretty good buys used as long as you know the history of the car. Bang for buck excellent.

There are tons around so take your time and the best buys are the people who bought them and then are selling them since it gets worse mileage than their old accord.

I only buy used cars, but I'd never buy a used sports car, unless I intended to rebuild the engine and tranny. How much could somebody screw it up in 3,000 miles? Don't know, but I'd hate to find out the hard way.

IMO (which isn't much) Same as w/ any sports car. You just need to check it out carefully. Some get beat on, others are driven to church on Sundays by little old ladies (1/4mile at a time). IOW, if it's a v8 5spd it's probably been driven hard. But, it's supposed to be, so, check it out throughly, and save some cash for repairs. It'll probably be OK.

Who will drive the Maxima, that's the important question?

An '02 would still have a little warranty left, would it not? I have no clue.

Like alkemyst said though, try to get a guage on the person selling it, talk to them lots. There's those people that you just get a bad feeling from, and then there's some who are either being really honest or can fake it really good. What I'm trying to say is, don't buy the first nice GT/Cobra from a 23 year old guy with his hat on backwards whose smoking when you show up. Check around and find the Cobra with low mileage that a 48 year old guy owned, with three kids. He probably stored it in the winters and just changed his mind after his wife bawled him out for trading in their Accord for it. 🙂

It's really a question of interest more than anything else...I am not sure mrsskoorb would go for a mustang. But then I wasn't sure she'd go for a subwoofer in the sentra, and that's all taken care of 😀
