YACT: Honda vs. Toyota

My parents are in the market for a new car. They have narrowed it down to the '07 Honda Pilot EX-L fully loaded against the '07 Toyota Highland Hybrid with CVT Fully Loaded.

I personally think, as they are so similar in price, the Highlander would be a much better deal. In my experience Toyota makes much nicer SUV's and Trucks than Honda, but my parents like the Honda.

Can you guys throw some opinions out there on this? I think the believe they can get the price down to about 34K for either SUV. So any other suggestions will be fine as well.

HIghlander - if its only the two of them
Pilot - If there are still kids in the house
Honda leather > Toyota leather
I question the value of spending $6k extra for a hybrid system on a SUV
 
Honda.

A Highlander is not even meant to compete with a Pilot, a 4-Runner would be more of a proper comparison.
 
Pilot is a bit bigger in dimensions than the Highlander. Both of them are getting at the end of their life cycle and are do for refreshes/remodels in the next year or two if that matters.

My wife has a Highlander and really appreciates it. It's very easy to drive, has very few blind spots, is comfortable, and the space is very functionally laid out. Very little wasted space. Only complaint is that from a stop the 3.3L is a little anemic. Takes a bit for the throttle tip in to finally catch up. Gas milage is much lower than published as well. We are lucky to pull 21MPG on the highway. I think it stickers at 24.

The hybrid you are looking at makes it a harder choice though. It will be considerably more fuel thrifty in town and in limited highway driving than the Pilot will be.

If you want a little bit bigger vehicle, you owe it to yourself to at least test drive the new Lambda's from GM. Head to a Saturn dealer and check out the Outlook or go to a GMC dealer and look at the Acadia. Reviewers are pretty much gushing over these things.
 
Well we have a Chrysler Town and Country EX right now. My Mom drives this (My Dad has his 03 Accord EX V6) and doesn't want something so big. I'm in College, my 15 year old sister is less than a year away from driving, and then we have my 12 year old sister. So we definitely don't need more room. I will say however, that the CR-V and the RAV4 were too small.

Does anyone know about how much of a Tax break you get on a Hybrid SUV of the Highlanders nature in the state of VA?

Ill look online at the GMC and others specs before I let my parents know to check them out, thanks for the recommendation!

Father has an '04 Pilot EX (bought in December '04, it was a leftover and the dealer gave him a great price) with 120,000 miles on it now. Running beautifully. I'm reasonably fond of it. Definitely not a bad choice for an imitation truck.

If you're towing, get a real truck with body on frame construction, but as a station wagon substitute, the Pilot is very nice.

Well she originally wanted to get a Kia Sorrento because one of her friends had one and she liked the style. But she reconsidered when I told her Dad would leave her and I would fail all of my classes on purpose if she did 😉.

They are both car based SUVs in exactly the same class and with similar boxy styling.

I have to say, that Acadia is NICE. I'm definitely going to recommend this to them. Even though it is more expensive they have those GM points they thought they would never ever use.

My Dad had two Pilots. Both were totaled (not his fault), but thankfully he came out scratch free. He bought an MDX right before the refresh because we convinced him the Pilot was bad mojo, but go for the Pilot, is nice!
 
They are going for the Pilot, but I seriously think the Highlander would be a better choice (Low Range Gearing, CVT, More Powerful Engine).

Don't get me wrong, I love Honda's, but Toyota's IMO make much better Light Trucks and SUV's.

C&D said in their review of the original Pilot that they prefered it over the Highlander (a 2003 article), and that it is an excellent family car. if you need a more sporting drive, the Acura MDX is a better choice, but at considerable more cost.

lol, well while we're recommending alternatives, i say rdx, they are cheap now, and supposedly quicker all around than mdx.
 
I got them to at least look at the RDX Specs and Reviews I printed out, but (Excuse me while I rant a little hear) they are so mind numbingly annoying at this. They ask my opinion on cars because I know a lot (Nothing very in depth tho like you guys), yet when I tell them to look at other vehicles they play the favoritism card and say they want the Honda.

I badly want them to look at the GMC Acadia, Acura MDX, and the Highlander Hybrid Limited.

I'm actually working up a graph right now of the fuel economy vs price curve between the the Highlander and the Pilot (The Acadia, and MDX get similar Mileage to the Pilot). I'm going to add a trend line and figure out the avg amount of money they will save per year.

Just doing the calculations in my at the low end of the spectrum (City Driving) I figured it to be ~550 dollars saved a year (Assuming 12,000 miles and $2.20 Gasoline)

Seriously stop trolling my thread. If you have an opinion which you can back up by all means tell me and I will take it into consideration.

Ok guys, I'm sensing something screwy here. We got an estimate from a dealer in Alexandria (We live in Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area). Here is the invoice:
Kelly Blue Book Invoice Price: ~$32,000
Local Dealer Invoice: First offer $34,400
Alexandria Dealer Invoice: First offer $30,100 (Tax, tags and title fee bring it up to ~31.5)

How in the hell can the final price be less than the recommended invoice price. They are going up to Alexandria to look at the car before buying it (My Dad may play favorites, but he knows what he is doing 😉 ), but the car is fully loaded EX-L with Navigation. NOT ONLY that, but it also includes, Locking Nuts, Fog Lights, Auto Mirror, something else). The only thing I feel they need to add on to that price is Exhaust Tip (Aesthetically it looks better than a corroding black one), and Roof Rack Cross bars.

Can someone help me think of some way this price can be that much lower??
