YACT: Honda Dealer coolant color question

Is Honda Dealer coolant a dirty green color?

My mom got her accord back from service a few days ago and they changed the coolant. Now she is worried they put in dirty coolant because of the color.

its this kinda green http://www.clayfactoryinc.com/images/wire/28054.jpg

They also added a black tube that runs from the coolant cap to the bottom of the tank (its inside the tank). Is that normal to have, she said it wasn't there before.

Thanks in advance

chances are its dirty green because there is rust/dirt in the system - quite common. Doesnt sound like anything weird about the tube in the tank. But then again, i dont know much about cars 😀

the tube in the reserve or overflow tank is normal. the fluid should be green, but not have any black or brown in it. should only be green.

and the coolant the dealer put in is this kinda green http://www.clayfactoryinc.com/images/wire/28054.jpg

hmm thats a dark green alright. try usig a flashlight to see if it just looks that dark because of no light? I always check the color of the coolant by whats in the top of the radiator; taking off the radiator cap when the engine is completely cool, then shine a flashlight to check the color.

I hope the honda dealer isn't using recycled coolant.

that's the color of honda coolant. if you buy honda coolant from their parts department and dilute it, it'll look dark green.

They did not add that tube, unless the old one fell off and they noticed it was missing. That's the overflow/recovery tube. When the coolant heats up, it expands into the recovery bottle, and when it cools down, it contracts and sucks coolant back into the radiator from the bottle.

OEM Honda coolant is dark green i have some if you want me to take pics to compare it to.

How much do they get for a gallon of the stuff? Just curious. I'll spend $8 for an OEM oil filter but not for OEM coolant😛

If your gonna go through the trouble of checking the color of your coolant after they change it, and your mom notices things like an extra hose, why do you guys even bother taking it to the dealer?
Sounds like you might as well do home repairs.

if your that worries put some in a clear bottle and hold it up to the light. if its chunky its dirty. then shake it, if it turns into green/brown milshake like foamy goo, theres oil in it

OEM Coolant cost about 15 bucks a gallon, i wouldn't use anything but OEM honda fluids in my car.

That's kinda odd... that doesn't make it too easy to tell if it's getting dark from dirt and contaminants. Toyota uses crayon red btw. What other weird OE colors do we have?

EDIT: coolant is coolant... so long as it's not crappily made/formulated. Prestone works for me.

GM uses an orange coolant IIRC.

And HiTek, do you use OEM oil as well? Just curious. Personally, I figure 10 years ago when my engine was originally so most coolant was the same. I just use Prestone and call it a day🙂

That might be GM Dexcool... which is a PITA. You can flush it out and use nice cheap standard ethylene glycol mixs in most cases thankfully.

because I dunno how to do this mechanical stuff nor do I really have the desire to learn how to do it.
