"Dozens injured as nearly 200 cars collide on fog-bound LA-area freeway

Sunday November 03, 2002

By PAUL WILBORN

Associated Press Writer

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) Nearly 200 cars and big-rig trucks collided on the fogbound Long Beach Freeway early Sunday, injuring dozens of people, nine critically, and closing the highway for hours.

``The fog was thick and all you saw on the horizon was the cars piled up in both directions,'' driver Rob Zeigler told KABC-TV. He said his car was pushed into the pile but he wasn't seriously injured.

``You could hear all the crashing and the banging. You could feel your car moving, knowing that other cars are still hitting you,'' he said.

Some cars were buried under others, and some of the injured had to be cut from their vehicles.

Dozens of cars, vans and big-rig trucks could be seen tangled together and littering both sides of the freeway about 25 miles south of Los Angeles.

There were two separate accident sites on the freeway, located hundreds of yards apart.

CHP Officer Joseph Pace said there were 194 vehicles involved, including seven or eight big-rig trucks.

Forty-one people were injured, nine of them critically, he said. The most seriously injured were taken to local hospitals.

Early morning fog may have contributed to the pileups, which started just before 7 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Douglas Kondo said.

Driver Manny Manuelos said he had slowed as a big-rig truck smashed through the center divider but cars came up behind him at 25 to 35 mph.

``I see vehicles coming in back of me ... I'm just, like, sitting there and I go, 'oh, here it comes.``'"

Now on CNN.com with a crappy small pic

It's amazing that no deaths were mentioned... yet...?

hmm... I can't find any on the local news websites :( I just heard it on tv like 10 mins ago. They said it was because of the dense fog. They showed a couple of screenshots. Man it was UGLY. 30-40 tow trucks already on the scene.

Stupidity. That's why driving way over the speed limit is a bad idea for most people.

Especially in dense, heavy fog. You would've thought that they guessed it was f'in dangerous if they couldn't see even a couple feet in front of them.

Well the strange thing was it wasn't too overcast around 6 a.m. but it was DENSE later on around 7 a.m. It's burned off by now. Sounds like a lot of mess, but perhaps no fatalities.

This type of thing happened on the I-5 in the Central Valley somewhere a few years back, and IIRC that was *MESSY* compared to this.

saw it on the news when I left for work this morning, crazy.

Christmas eve last year @ 4a.m. I was driving home from that area of long beach, I'd never seen it so foggy in my life. My brother drove home at about 40 mph with his hazards on, it was nuts. Lots of people going pretty slow, thankfully. Only a few numbnuts going 60+.

i remember, december 2000, i was driving the 55 carpool overpass at the 55/5 junction. oh man, visibility was like 5-8 feet. I slowed down to about 30-40 mph, and this is on a high carpool 1-lane pass.

People who say that this crash happened because of stupidity obviously don't know any logic. If you actually do drive your visibility (maybe about 20-30 mph) OBVIOUSLY somebody going slowly (55mph-60mph) will crash into you or it will cause some problems. and trust me, NOBODY drives 20-30 mph on the 405 at all (when there's no traffic) under ANY weather conditions

And that's not stupidity HOW?

If 10,000 idiots all follow each other off a bridge, they're still idiots.

Hmm. AFA insurance claims for these types of things go, I guess it's no-fault and your insurance fixes your own car, right? Man, if all you have is liability, you're SOL!! :Q
