I have a 2002 Chevy Prizm w/40k miles.

For the past couple of days, i hear a high pitch sound for a couple of seconds when i accelerate past 70mph. if i go below 70mph, then accelerate past that mark, i hear the noise again.

What's causing this and should i be worried?

Probably getting ready to explode. The noise is just a warning...

Any shaking or vibration when it happens. Could be the trans/converter.

Maybe you have a turbo in there you didn't know about? :p Or... kind of a long shot, but I heard the same thing on my car except it happened everytime I shifted gears. I found out it was the CD player that made the noise. Why it's synchornized to the gear shifting, I don't know. Anybody have any inputs?

Maybe the hamsters are tired of runnning and need some rest? :p

Maybe its the brakes. My dad had a problem like that, but it was only noticible at low speeds.

I drove out to Ohio recently (550 miles) and the car made a funny whiny sound when it went over 65. I just figured it was a good way to pay attention to the speed limit.

When I got there I went to gas up and we noticed that I had a tire all cut up. Very lucky that it didn't blow up on the long drive - THIS close to going.

Check your tires. (After washing the engine and feeding the gerbils.)

what does washing the engine out have anything to do with high pitch noise when accelerating at high speeds?

My car kinda does it, but differently. When I'm in say 4th and at 2krpms and floor it and the car shift and the rpms bounce up to maybe 4 or 5k rpms.

Doesn;'t happen when i accelerate slowly to even 110 in my 93 camry.

Check your door gaskets for lumps of crud or for being folded back.
Are all windows all the way up.?......:sun:

It would be better if he went "SUPRA SONIC"!

Remove your drive belt/s and check for looseness or play in all driven components.
A/C, P/S, W/P, Alt., and tension pulley if it has one.
Maybe a bearing is just dry or worn. Try spinning them by hand to check for a noise.
Wiggle them to feel for play, a tiny bit is OK.
Is your A/C on when this happens, if so turn it off & check.
Is the P/S low on fluid? Just offering a direction hope it helps..............:sun:
