I've got a 1982 Toyota 4x4 Pickup running a 22R engine (bone stock) and it's CO emissions are a little too high at the 2500rpm reading -- it needs to be below 150ppm and I'm about 220ppm. Any idea on how I can get those numbers down? I was thinking about getting a bucket of the "Pass Emissions or your Money Back!" things and pouring in like 4 bottles.

I ran it through emissions once, but it failed with the carbon monoxide issue ... the guys said I should take it down and get the carb rejetted / rebuilt. That's a lot more than like $15 at the automotive store for a handful of fuel cleaners.

Help!

just pay some independant shop/test center guy $45 to do the test and he'll pass you.

Haha... thats what all my friends do... their cars either have swapped engines... turbos... or really old... and they can't pass. My POS car passes with flying colors though... :confused:

what about a full tune up?
plugs, wires, coolant flush, oil change, everything.
run some carb cleaner in a bottle through it and bring 'er back..

i don't know.. things to try.

CO = incomplete burn..
change the plugs, wires (if ncessary), Put some fuel injector / carb cleaner.... CO could also be due to carbon on the valves..

Also check your exhaust pipe for carbon.. sometimes that triggers it.

Try a compression test that might screw things up too..

Worst yet, make friends with a test center and put your friends car in place of yours and have your car pass.

I agree that you should probably replace your plugs and wires. Also, you might look into replacing the coil if you're not getting a good and solid white spark at the plugs.

Replace the catylitic converter.

Edit:
My reasoning is that the sole job of the cat is to speed the breakdown of CO into CO2, and it only works when hot (so make sure the car is tested after running).
