YACT: Has anyone tried mass emailing dealers to get price quotes?

AnyMal

As much as I hate doing that, it's time to go car shopping. Our 94 Prizm and 2000 Golf are not accomodating our family too well (2 kids) so it's minivan time 🙁 To save myself some hassle, I went ahead and got the loan from my local bank rather then let dealer do that for me. Now, comes the part I dread the most, shopping.

I was thinking about emailing our local dealers asking them about type of van I am looking for and asking for features and price quote. What do you think, good idea? Has anyone done it? Any tips?

I helped someone buy a loaded brand new Honda Odyssey EX automatic V6 for $24,900 out the door.

w00t!

I did the exact same thing for my sister a few weeks ago. I was emailing & calling a bunch of Nissan dealers.
If you're looking for a new minivan, the best thing is to send them an email through the dealership's website. That's good for initial contact so they can check if they have the vehicle you want in stock. When you want a price though, I found it almost impossible to get that out of them through email. You'll have to call and speak to them directly for that.
If you want used, some dealer websites do have inventories online, but not a lot.

End of 2001 I emailed 4 local car dealers. I was not asking for any specific prices or anything but just some casual questions. I got back zero replies.

I guess they didn't want my money and they did not get it.

Nothing turns me off more quickly than a business that seems too lazy to help you buy something it is trying to sell.

That is how I bought my Ram. I sent out about 40 e-mails and 20 faxes (to dealerships that did nto have web/email access) I started haggeling with them all, playing one against the other. It finaly got to the point where neither would go any lower, so I started playing with add on's. I got a fully decked out Larime for a few hundred over their cost (their real cost, not invoice), 3 free oil changes, and a free bedliner 🙂

About 1/2 did not respond to the first faxes and e-mail, so make sure to send them to every dealer within a 50 mile radius that sells the car you are lookin for.

I used that as a starting point when my fiance was shopping for a vehicle last year.
-Basically it doesn't hurt-
also helps you weed out the dealerships so you don't have to waste your time in person.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I am looking to buy late model 2000-2002 Caravan/Voyager/T&C. I am not considering brand new vehicle because of immediate depretiation.

I will not try to negotiate the price over the email, I simply want to know whether they have something I may be interested in, rather then spending hours driving around looking. Not to mention, since I will be trading in my behated 2000 Golf, I doubt they'll want ot haggle over the Internet.

RossMAN, that is definitely a great deal for Odyssey, unfortunately it's out of my price range.
