Just wanted to get an idea of how reasonable the price is. Been going to this mechanic for a long time and he is very good/reasonable but was just curious.

Getting the front pads and rotors replaced for $240 total.

What you think? (and don't say do it youself, because I don't have the time, desire, nor equipment to do so :) )

New pads & new rotors or rotors just turned? Parts & labor?

As long as its OE quality and new, good deal.

Doesn't sound too bad. I think parts normally will run $100-150, so $100-$150 in labor doesnt sound terrible.

better than my 800 dollar bmw brake replacement...They finally went after 44500 miles. Front and rear pads and rotors and front and rear brake sensors also brake ventilators. Add that all together with 99/hr labor in baltimore...equals pwned...

95 Toyota Avalon. It is new pads and new rotors for the front only. No idea when they were last done, but I could tell they needed to be replaced badly.

And yes this includes parts and labor.

Why not do it yourself?

It doesn't take long, and it requires very little equipment. It seems like you just want the easy way out, which is dumb in my opinion.. especially if it will cut the cost in half or more..

I just replaced the front rotors and pads on my 99 Saturn SC1. Took all of about an hour.. It doesn't really involve that many tools.. I'm sure you have everything that you need.

Lets see.. I still have my receipts in my wallet actually..
$61.46 for two Duralast rotors
$26.49 for a set of lifetime warranty, Duralast pads
$87.95 total plus about an hour .. give or take a few minutes..

I got my front and rear brakes pad and rotors replaced for around for the same amount you got quoted for.

I bought the parts from NAPA for $130ish and my mechanic quote me under $100 for the labor.

Make sure he's using OE quality parts and sounds like you've got a good deal.

Also ask to see your old parts of course ;)

It is a good price with OEM parts. As for BMWs, I had the $800 estimate myself. Instead I bought the parts from realoembmw ($115), bought the tools I didn't already have (15mm socket and 7mm hex socket, $22 at Sears) and did it myself. First side took 45 minutes, second took 15 minutes. I then bled the brakes :)

so true. I wish i had the time and a plce to do it. Then again, even though I think i'm pretty handy, I just dont trust myself with brakes yet. I would have to watch someone do it at least once, before I even attempt it.

Well on my old car about a month ago, I got new brake pads in front, in back, new rotors on front, and the rear rotors turned for about $360, so I guese it's all where you live.

Edit: a local Midas charged $100 per axle to replace brake pads, that includes parts and labor.

The BMW brakes have a high retail value because BMW charges alot for them at the dealership. But I can tell you that if you look at the wholesale price, they are some of the cheapest brakes on the market for their size. And you can get fairly close to wholesale by choosing a good internet vendor. We always messed around with a guy at the shop about how the parts cost for a 7 series was half the cost of brakes for his Ford Focus. And we're comparing 13in rotors to something around 10in...

Well, using the on-line parts guy I do a lot of business with, the front rotors run $35-$50 each for stock rotors, ($250 for drilled pair) and the pads from $33 to $60 (ceramics)
Using those prices, figure parts to be about $120-$150, so anything over that is just labor. Front disk brakes are HELLA easy to do on most cars. Not sure about the Toyota's, never worked on them, but I suspect 1/2 hr /side is generous for labor. At that parts cost, $240 isn't BAD, but you can do it yourself cheaper.

LoL - I did them using the car jack on the parking lane of my street after reading and re-reading the RoadFly tech piece over a few times. It was really quite simple - just remove wheel, use the 7mm allen socket on the rotor retaining bolt - you may well break it off with an allen wrench, remove the two bolts holding the caliper, the two bolts holding the caliper carrier, remove old sensor and replace pads, insert new sensor, replace and secure rotor, replace caliper carrier and then caliper.

Sounds complicated but it really is about as tough as removing bolts and replacing bolts. Oh, use brake smeg on the back of the pads to keep them from squealing - the AutoZone $15 pads (which the e30 Roadfly non-track drivers really like) come with a little tube of it.
