So I plan on getting a new car later next month. I'm 21, live at home, have a good job etc...

I'm trying to decide on which car to get for ~$30k. Right now I am drooling over the '05 WRX STI - but I also like the G35 coupe. Which of these should i get? Or perhaps recommend a different car.

BTW i want to buy NEW:)

Have you checked your insurance rates on the STi and if you have, what are they??

I haven't checked yet.. the person at the dealership said that it shouldnt be too much more compared to what i have now; but what else is he supposed to say?

Thankfully, my parents pay- and told me they will continue to pay- for my car insurance

I don't really have a need for speed, so the STi doens't really appeal to me. If I was looking at cars in that price range for myself, these are what I'd consider:

G35 coupe
Acura TSX (w/ navigation)
Subaru Forrester XT (will run quarter miles in the high 13's - STOCK: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1350455 - and it has useful space too!!!)
Accord V6 coupe 6-speed
Possibly the new Solara SE (if I wanted an automatic)

I might add a Nissan Maxima to that list

So when do you plan on cutting your umbilical cord?

I'm going to test drive a WRX-STi this weekend. I'll post my impressions here after. I checked on insurance and it will be $800/year for me on this car.

I've driven the G35 and the Acura TSX (friends own these cars) and while I really like the G35, it is several thousand more and is a 2 door (which is a minus for me since I have a young son at home). The WRX might be too small though. I'll have to weigh that in my decision. TSX was nice but not enough performance for the money in my opinion.

I bought my first new car a couple of months ago and negotiated the out the door price completely over email before going to the dealership for a final test drive, paperwork, inspection of the car, and handing over the keys (about 90 minutes total). I highly recommend the method to others.

I got all my details and comparisons at edmunds.com They have forums where people discuss what they paid, what they got and where they got it. You might check it out if you're looking for the best deal.

Notes:

1) I test drove several cars to decide what I wanted to go after.

2) I emailed only about five dealerships.

3) The car I bought is pretty common (2004 Honda Accord V6 coup (leather, power, CD/XM, etc.)), and I'm not sure the email approach will work well without competition (ie. it probably won't work with a Mercedes or Jaguar, maybe it won't work with a VW or Subaru).

4) I bought the car well under invoice and had negotiated the car/options and the "out-the-door" price before going to the dealership.

5) I dealt with one guy. He needed no approval from financing or his manager. He didn't try to add anything to the negotiated price.

G35 is upgraded for '05, just make sure the new material is not crappy like the previous year.

STI you shouldn't have any issues. Brother has wrx and it's rock solid, no major problems.

TSX w/navi is fully loaded and also very nice. no complaints here :D

What if I filed a claim (3 months ago) that wasn't my fault; will my insurance go up next time? Also, would it give them reason to make it cost even more if I get a new car?

IIRC any accident counts against you. Lucky me my fender-bender never showed up on my record;)

$800?? I still pay about $755/yr full coverage w/ Liberty mutual. I was with geico and paying 1200/yr. Maybe you ought to change providers :)

I'm married, over 30 years old, clean driving record (no tickets, no accidents) and have multiple cars on my policy. With USAA insurance also.

BTW-I always get a couple hundred dollars back from them every year.

How about buy a car that you could afford when you are living on your own, or are you going to pay this off before you graduate?

It just blows my mind that people will spend so much money on a car, and settle for living at home with mommy and daddy.

You're 21. Grow up and live on your own, and drive an 87 cresseda like everyone else had to.

Not everybody looks at living on their own as being top priority. Its a cultural thing so deal with it.
