Current vehicle: 1997 Honda Passport. Nice vehicle and no major problems. Currently it's developed a transmission leak and the driver side window motor is about dead but I expect it won't be too long before something serious goes wrong.

I bought it new when I was still in college and, back then, I went hiking/camping almost every week so it saw a fair amount of dirt. Not so much these days. I still go when I can but it's more like two or three times a season. Still, I'm not convinced I'd be happy with a car. I do occasionally haul my telescopes around and there's no way i could fit those in a car unless I bought a wagon. Not to mention the frequent trips I make to Lowes and Home Depot. :)

Here are the models I'm considering:

Toyota 4Runner SR5 or Limited
Honda Pilot AWD
Pre-Owned Lexus RX330 (new is a little pricey but I can probably swing a pre-owned)
06 Toyota Tacoma (If I were to get a full-fledged truck, this would probably be the one).

I'd like to keep price below $35k. Any comments or suggestions? How about the Ford Escape?

I think that a US Passport is only good for 6 years, so if your's is a '97 you have to apply all over.

If you're willing to wait, the newly designed 06 RAV4 with a V-6 is worth looking at.
