YACT: Fun + Practical cars?

2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V

$14,600 from Carsdirect for my area code.

The car that I was SO close to buying but got my Passat instead

2001 or 2002 GTI. 🙂 Any golf 1.8t or vr6 would do. 1.8t if you want to slap a chip on there and add about 40 horses. vr6 if you wanna leave it stock.

They're great little cars, fun to drive for sure, and can haul. Granted it's not a pickup back but I can take 4 people in my car + a goalie bag and goalie pads for hockey in the trunk no problem.

Mmmmmm VW's 🙂

or a couple year old REX 🙂 Mmmmmmm AWD. I'd get a wrx if you're in the snow a lot and/or you'd need to haul more stuff than a golf's hatch can hold often.

Go team VW

If I had $15k to buy a FUN & practical car.

I would shop for an unmolested 93-95 Toyota MR2, m/t and not in black color.
There is a red one owner on ebay at present....😛
If I needed a bit more practical, I would go Celica.
Either can be had for less than $15k.

Yeah, but only the non-turbos come unmolested😉

NutBucket,
I could live with a n/a, 2.2na any day.
Finding one without those corny T-tops is a problem.
So like em', I don't. $15k for a used car opens up
all kinds of possibilities though........

I don't see an MR2 as very practical. It only seats 2, has virtually no cargo space, and has relatively poor traction and handling in bad weather or bad roads. Celica isn't that much better (although it has a bit more space and could seat 4 in a crowded pinch).

Golf/GTI, Sentra Spec-V, or Impreza 2.5RS (for AWD) would be the best cars in this price range or below IMO. WRX's are holding their values very well -- only a beaten and tortured child can be found for under $15k right now ($17-18k would get you a good 2002 though).

I did for many years. I'm not impressed by Toyota 2.2nas but I only have experience with But yea, for $15k you're better off with a used car for "fun". Although, you could get a nice mid 80's AE86 for less then $5k😉

A used Protege5 is definitely in the price range and somewhat practical. It's not terribly fast but I have heard they are fun to drive.
