You spent $1500 to save $10/week on gas? By the time the gas savings pay for the car, it will have died and you'll have bought another one.

10$/week?

Where did you come up with that figure? :p

Our old vehicle, an '81 1/2ton Chevy PU with a built 350, gets around 8MPG average(it's in bad need of a tuneup). Ontop of that, it required Plus(10.5:1 CR).

He was spending 10$ every 2-3 days on gas. We barely drive anywhere.. It's hard to imagine what it would be like if he actually had a significant commute to work.

I estimate our savings to be 80-100$ a month. That's to be seen, but the difference should be quite noticable in the wallet, especially with gas prices at all time highs around here.

It's more than just the gas, though. You can only fit 3 people comfortably in the truck, unless you stick people in the back. A car is more convienent than a big PU, but we are keeping the PU for hauling and such. It's just more efficient and economical.

Plus, you apparently failed to notice the service history and brand of the car. :p It would be just our luck to have something serious go wrong, but I have driven in Toyotas in much worse condition, with many more thousands of miles.. I think we'll take the chance. ;)

He will save a little more since insurance should not be too much for this car. My 1987 Cressida cost me about 65 a month in insurance. I think it's a lot less than your cobra? :p

My 89 turbo caravan was $800 and had 120k miles on it. It runs great but the paint does look like hell.
It is fuel injected.

The engine is REALLY clean. :Q I mean it when I say this car was very well taken care of. That's the best part. If it was just some random car that we knew nothing about, then yeah.. 1500$ isn't as good of a deal.

The exterior is in pretty nice shape. It has the normal wear and tear.. rock chips on the front, bumper scuffs.. but nothing major. The exterior looking nice compared to not can easily make the difference between wanting to pay 800$ for a car and 1500$. :)

I decided to look on Edmunds. In "Clean" condition, private party, it's worth about 1100$. Dealer retail is ~2000$.

I do still think it was a good deal, though. Cars between 1 and 2k are a dime a dozen in the paper, but the proverbial one owner, female driven, in excellend condition with all service records cars are harder to find.

That's what we had been waiting for, but either we were too late on the good ones, or we didn't like them.

Plus, we're going to save over 100$/mo on gas. ;)

Heh,
i like how the intake mani has big red EFI on it ... and people suggest its carbed... :)

My dad bought a 88 buick park avenue for $1000.. of course he bought it with 208,000 miles on it, but it runs like a charm, everything was in mint condition in it... the a/c still works... it's got all electronic dash and climate control stuff...

only problem is is that he hit a deer with it (still drives it though)... right now I think he's got about 230,000 miles on it... so he's at least put 20,000 miles on her...

We've used them for drag racing, seemed to work alright. We've changed to AC IIRC though.

Heh. I guess if the alternative is infrequent or - gasp - no oil/filter changes, anything is ok. ;)
