WTH? A V4? Does any car company make a V4 engine anymore?

I think you're talking about an INLINE 4, or STRAIGHT 4,.....

Eh,.....

SRT4s aren't made anymore and they never came in automatic

the WRX in 2.0L auto was actually never that fast. high 15s or so, it does have a 2.5L now but still handicapped by 4 speed auto.

What about a miata. I'd say in a car as light as that, you'd probably feel the acceleration.

I don't think they come in auto.

Yeah, you can get one with an auto,...... my mother in law has one.

wrx would probably provide what your looking for. Most of these other cars you's find yourself doing burnouts instead of launching ahead.

WRX with the auto is pretty bad, but it would do, and hey brake stands can be fun :)

A TSX can be bought for about $27K. Those are pretty fast 4 -bangers. 200HP. The S2000 is probably the fastest 4-banger out there.

Ahahahaha...

Until you try to take anything from a rolling start.

Anyway, to the OP, you need to learn to drive a stick. All the really good 4 cyl options are stick. If sheer power/acceleration is what you're looking for a used SRT-4 would be well under your budget (considering brand new they were $4K under your budget) and the power is hard to argue.

TSXs are slow, they are actually no faster than i4 accords

Are you sure the Mazda doesn't just feel like it's accelerating less because of the better head/neck support and overall seat support? That car has great seats, and if I remember correctly, old corollas do not. I just find it hard to believe that the modern mazda engine is less powerful than the old toyota engine.

They've been made, but I don't think anyone's making V4s for cars at the moment.

Any "fast" 4-banger with an automatic would have to be blown, of course. Does the $25k include mods?

Lancer Ralliart. 0-30mph in 1.9s.

performance numbers

For comparison, the Spec-V does 0-30mph in 2.4s.

Ralliart's advertised as 162hp, but it puts down the same dyno numbers as a Spec-V which is advertised as 175hp.

Oh yeah, I got mine brand new for $15k.

Wow. I thought the Ralliart was just all show, like body kit, rims, etc. Or was there another one that's called OZ Rally or something like that?

That's the OZ Rally, which is just a regular Lancer with a body kit.

Ralliart has a totally different engine, transmission and suspension.

Learn to drive manual and your options will increase like crazy. Of course your whole criteria will be subjective to how you like the acceleration, so go test drive. Get in an RSX, Eclipse, Mini Cooper, Scion tc, Cobalt, etc. If you really want to see some good performance out of a 4-banger, you'll have to get out of the slushbox mentality and go with a manual. Heck, I learned to drive manual on the way home from the dealer in my new car last fall.

they do but the autos suck and don't hold their value because no one wants an automatic miata. maybe the new miata autos are better but I dunno. I would recommend the mazdaspeed mx-5 but i dunno if they come in auto.

if you were going to buy an automatic miata I'd personally get a used one and add a supercharger. you wouldn't be able to boost it higher than around 6psi though or you'd probably blow the transmission. that's the nice thing about manuals, if you want to increase the boost you just put in a stronger clutch. still 6psi would be good for around 180hp in a first gen miata, probably around 190-200 maybe in a second gen. that's plenty fast enough to throw your head back.

Maybe look for a used Eagle Talon TSI. My Talon TSI AWD had kick ass acceleration and 210hp 2.0L 4 banger. I had the 5 speed, but maye the auto isn't so bad. They last made them in '98 IIRC, but they go well under your budget.
