YACT: Explorer A/C compressor question

Wife's explorer A/C compressor is making a racket lately when engaging the AC. AC comes out semi cold, but I hear a rapid clicking from the compressor--not like its low on refrigerant, but like a very fast ticking or clicking sound, several every second. I'm guessing the clutch is on its last legs or there is an internal bearing failure of some sort.

At any rate, I am going to take the compressor apart on the vehicle but wanted to know how much I can take off without having to evacuate the system first.

You can remove the compressor from the bracket and even replace the cutch and coil, but you will have to make sure the air gap is set properly. If you have to take any hoses off, evacuation is in order at a shop. This is really something that is best done by a mechanic.

I am 99.9% sure i can do this without any problem. I can replace brushes on alternators, put in a clutch, pull motors, replace camshafts, etc, so this shouldnt be a stretch. I just wasnt sure how much I could take off before I compromised the system.

I am pretty sure the only compressor serviceable item without evacuating/recovery is the clutch. If the compressor is making a noise, most likely it cannot be repaired until you evacuate/recover the refrigerant.

some Ford A/c compressors are notorious for failing and contaminating your entire a/c system and have earned the name "black Death" in the Motor vehicle a/c world. If your vehicle suffers the "black death" plan on replacing most parts including your a/c condensor when your compressor goes out.

thanks for the advice edfmc. I have read up on the Black Death and am crossing my fingers.

I have a 93 EB Explorer that was retrofitted in 98 with 134a as well which I heard is death for these compressors. I hope they arent too expensive at the boneyard.

If you should have to replace the compressor, do not get one from a junkyard. While chances are you will get an ok one, the bigger chance is you will get one that has had some sort of contamination too. Get a reman unit.
