I'm thinking it needs a new battery. Could also be the starter though.

'96 Isuzu Rodeo, 70k miles.

I bought this vehicle from a co-worker about 5 months ago and it started doing this recently. It has never failed to start but it seems to be getting worse. I am going out to the desert this weekend in it though and wouldn't want it to not start out there in the middle of nowhere.

Sounds like a starter problem.

OLD gm starters had this problem big time as the starter was right beside the exhust.

Yup, that was my thought too.

If it's the original battery, he should change that too probably.

Yup.

I had major problems with starting a warm engine when I had headers. The headers were right next to the starter, and it takes more amps to go through a hot circuit than a cold one.

All I know is the motors in those things are absolutely bullet-proof. Had a friend who drove one for work. The job wanted to scrap it, but he convinced them to keep it. They agreed, but would not spend a single dime on maintenance. That was at 150k. When is got totaled at 210k, it was still running fine. Now think about that. 60k without an oil change! no less any other thing that could have gone wrong. Bullet-proof.

How difficult is it to replace the starter on these? It is a 3.2 liter V6. Not the GM 3.1 BTW.

I gaurantee you that I won't own this vehicle when it hits 100k miles.

i think u are having the same problem i had a couple months ago. it turned out to be a throttle body problem. car was under warranty so had the dealer replace the throttle body and the problem went away...so far

I don't see how it could be the throttle body. It is cranking slowly (not really accurate...weak would be more accurate). It cranks and starts fine cold but when the engine is warm it just sounds weak when it's turning over. It always starts though.

Assuming nothing else is wrong with vehicle, the starter is the logical place to look.

However, make sure the battery is up to snuff too along with the cables and what not.

As for the GM issue with heat: it was not the starter persay, but the solenoid that was the problem. Fords and Mopars rarely suffered from this issue because they had remote mounted solenoids.

I'd go with the starter as others have stated. When you go to purchase the starter, have the battery load tested to be sure that it's not at the end of the trail :) Clean all battery cable ends brite and secure with a lite coat of Vaseline.
This is to include the ground cable at the block and/or block to the frame. Many automotive electrical problems on older cars are poor grounds.
