YACT: Engine smoking???

I have a '93 Honda Accord SE. Like 3 days ago when I was driving on the freeway, I noticed a smell. It was like burning rubber or smoke. I thought it was just the other cars on the freeway. But when I parked, I noticed there were some smoke coming out from under the hood. I opened it up and there was indeed smoke coming from the fuel injection area above the engine. I thought it was just excess fuel burning because my battery GND wire also came lose (I think from hitting a bump on the freeway).

The next day I had the smell and smoke again, although to a lesser degree than the first. I checked the oil and I was nearly empty somehow. I put in two more quarts and drove it around. There was still a little bit of smoke but I figured it would go away. Today I noticed it was still smoking although still not as badly as the first day. I'm checking my oil gauage everyday to see if there's a significant drop but there isn't. I also noticed there wasn't a puddle of oil on the ground in the morning either so I don't think it's leaking oil.

What can it be?

At least he can get some ideas before shelling out money to a shop.

it's called self-diagnosing the problem man. i can at least try everything i could before paying a mechanic for what might be a $5 self-fix job.

You have an engine oil leak, most likely leaking directly on your exhaust system. Get this checked out before the engine catches on fire.

Maybe your oil sprung a leak somewhere. Faulty gasket or something. Mine used to leak oil in the same manner as you're describing.

Open up phone book, find mechanics, call up and explain problem, get suggestions. 100x faster. You've already determined that you have an oil leak, now go from there.

I don't think any mechanic is going to give you free advice over the phone. I'm sure there's enough car buffs here to know what might be the issue 😛

If it was leaking oil then wouldn't I see a puddle on the ground in the morning?

Not necessarily, your oil leak could be slow enough to let the oil burn off the exhaust system. Take a light and look down where the smoke was coming from and see if you can see a oil trail coming from some place above. Or take some pictures and post them here.

Yeah the oil can burn off while it drips but if I let it sit all night when the car is cool, shouldn't there be a puddle? As for pictures, I will take some in a bit. Thanks for the help.

Its very possible it only leaks if the there is pressure in the system, ie the engine is running. It could be your oil filter wasn't tightened properly the last time it was changed and is not leaking down onto the downpipe when the car is running.

If its bad, I have an extra Accord motor sitting in the garage😉
