YACT: Emergency!!

My 95 maxima won't shift out of park!!! (auto) tried restarting it a hundred times, it's stuck in park!!! my roommate needs to get to class... anyone know what to do? besides tell him to get the bus

Here's what you do, first make sure the vehicle is neither facing up nor downhill, this will cause the parking pawl to jam thus causing your frustration, second make sure that you firmly place your foot on the brake, there is a cable that runs from the brake pedal to the auto stick shift, it is a safety feature, the brake must be firmly applied to release the shifter.

Hi Roger, nice to have you back, you have been missed. 🙂

Hey Klixxer 🙂

Do not expect me to post in every YACT, I am only going to help those who I consider my friends, everyone else can bite me. :Q😛

thanks roger! although i read this post after i got it to work with the same technique, i would've done what you told me anyways.

I disconnected the battery for a little, then tried again... and after some pressure it was still stick. i got pissed and slammed it down and it loosened. thanks a lot.

it sucks cause i made my roommate miss a class 🙁

Either the cable or solenoid (under the shifter console) needs either adjustment or lubrication.

I had this same problem with my 95 Altima. It was the solenoid. I took it out, lubed it up, put it back in, it worked. Sometimes I had to jiggle it though, it was rather weird.
